Preparing our tech as a food security solution for the growing population in developing countries, Planetarians team learned that 42 million Americans depend on nutrients from food banks in the US. 42m here in the US! Such a large number of people cannot rely on occasional food donations. They need to eat daily. Food bank budgets have skyrocketed to $300-400m/year. It’s a huge burden for donors. With affordable proteins recreated?from beer leftovers, we can help reduce the donor burden. Additionally, this may remove obesity or malnutrition caused by low-quality food for recipients. This would further help reduce climate change by removing sidestreams from landfills, replacing animal meat with alternatives, and democratizing access to the healthiest nutrient—protein—for people who cannot afford it.
