Fred Moolten . . . also known as Dr Frederick Moolten, MD who attended Harvard College and Medical School to became a top cancer researcher, who accomplished pioneering work in the use of gene therapy for the treatment of cancer. He used to joke that his primary endeavor was music and singing with many songs and albums under his belt. His major focus was the environment and how civillations survive. An interesting view of a scenic bar in the Central African Republic just outside of Bangui, overlooking the Oubangui River with a view of the The Congo on the other side. As part of the expedition, we met with the President of the Central African Republic and some of his ministers discussing How Planet Startup could assist with economic development through innovation, entrepreneurship, investment and technology. Several American and foreign investors were interested in developing large scale food production operations in the area. I recall sitting at that bar, sharing a few delicious local brews with several doctors from the World Health Organization as Ebola was raging across Africa on the other side of the river but due to the efforts of the WHO, never made it across the river. #CreatedWithBgRem hashtag #planetstartup #Congo #centralafrica #bangui #africa #investment

Planet Startup planetstartup.org has decided to adopt a sea turtle! We’re doing this in the name of global sustainability, to raise awareness of the challenges these beautiful creatures face. This turtle was found sick in the ocean and is currently being cured and rehabilitated. In addition to our new mascot, we are hosting a global art contest with cash awards open to anyone who follows Planet Startup. We will be announcing the contest and the official rules soon. You will need to be able to accept money through a global payment platform, Western Union, or gift cards in order to collect the cash prize. We will post instructions for submitting your art for the logo as well as the name for the turtle. #environment #charity #planetstartup

The Rising Threat: Tick-Borne Diseases Killing and Spreading Globally A silent but deadly menace is creeping across the globe, causing fear and havoc in its wake: tick-borne diseases. These tiny arachnids, often no larger than a sesame seed, have become vectors for a host of debilitating and deadly illnesses. As climate change and global travel intensify, ticks are expanding their range, bringing with them a growing threat to public health. Lyme disease, the most well-known tick-borne illness, is just the tip of the iceberg. Caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, Lyme disease can result in severe neurological, cardiac, and arthritic complications if left untreated. But now, medical professionals are increasingly alarmed by the emergence of other tick-borne pathogens, some of which are proving to be even more lethal. Anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, and babesiosis are on the rise, with symptoms ranging from flu-like malaise to life-threatening complications. Worse still is the Powassan virus, a rare but often fatal disease. Unlike Lyme disease, which requires a tick to be attached for at least 24 hours to transmit the bacteria, Powassan virus can be transmitted in as little as 15 minutes. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, seizures, and encephalitis, leading to permanent neurological damage or death in severe cases. Areas of the United States, Canada, and Europe that once saw few cases of tick-borne diseases are now witnessing alarming increases. In some parts of the U.S., cases of Lyme disease have more than doubled in the past two decades. Meanwhile, the spread of ticks carrying the Heartland virus, which can cause fatal outcomes, has been documented in states as far apart as Missouri and New York. Global travel and the movement of animals also contribute to the spread of tick-borne diseases. Ticks hitch rides on migratory birds, domestic pets, and even humans, crossing borders and continents.
