Now you see it now you don’t—Tanager-1’s first methane mitigation success is a win for our satellite and for the planet! On October 9th, Tanager-1 detected a large plume over a gathering pipeline in the Texas Permian Basin. Each hour this leak emitted the CO2 equivalent to driving 47 gas-powered cars for a year. Our partner Carbon Mapper notified the state agency who got in touch with the facility operator to repair the pipeline. A subsequent Tanager-1 pass over on October 24th observed no #methane emissions—confirming a successful repair of the leak! Moving from methane detection to mitigation isn’t easy. Since its launch this August, our Tanager-1 satellite has spotted hundreds of atmospheric-warming methane plumes across the Earth. But spotting a plume and stopping its leak are separate issues. This success story highlights how equipping oil and gas operators with timely information can help them slash super-emitting events with negative impacts. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gQENUEZw

Our partner Carbon Mapper just released 300 methane and CO2 detections from our Tanager-1 satellite! These were identified across the world from a variety of sources, like plumes from oil and gas basins to landfills spotted between cloud cover. Read more:

It's more critical than ever to harness data sources and methodologies that reduce latency, without sacrificing scientific rigor, as emissions rise and our time to act dwindles. What’s needed now is a more robust understanding of how Earth’s carbon sinks and sources are changing at a granular scale. As political and industry leaders gather for #COP29, we wanted to highlight some of the ways our Forest Carbon product is doing just that—by helping decision-makers reduce wildfire risk, build credibility in voluntary carbon markets, and develop a better understanding of the policy drivers of carbon gains and losses.
