Black Friday: Deals for consumers, a dilemma for the planet. How can businesses lead the change? Black Friday contributes heavily to overall emissions and overconsumption. Behind the discounts lies a significant environmental cost: ? UK deliveries from Black Friday in 2021 emitted 429,000+ tons of CO? (equivalent to 435 return flights between London and New York). ? Up to 80% of products and packaging are discarded shortly after purchase. ? Short product lifespans and overproduction fuel waste and resource depletion. Businesses play a critical role in addressing these challenges. From improving logistics to rethinking production, the solutions are within our reach. The Council of the European Union approved its first-ever certification framework for carbon removals. This new regulation aims to boost high-quality European carbon removal and soil emission reduction activities - to achieve net-zero by 2050. Here are the key highlights: ? The framework covers permanent carbon removals, carbon farming, and carbon storage in products—ranging from reforestation and peatland restoration to using wood-based construction materials. ? Carbon removal projects must demonstrate quantifiable net carbon benefits, exceed statutory requirements (additionality), ensure long-term carbon storage, and promote environmental integrity—all verified by independent third parties. ? Robust monitoring, reporting, and liability mechanisms will build trust and hold operators accountable for maintaining carbon storage. ? An electronic EU-wide registry will be established four years after the regulation enters into force to ensure complete transparency and traceability of certified carbon units, reinforcing the system's integrity. How do you think this new framework will reshape the future of carbon removal? #sustainability #carbonremoval #carbonsequestration #carbonmarket #EU #regulations #decarbonisation

"Climate change is created universally, and it doesn’t matter if the emissions are from China, the US, or another place. If we continue with the same trajectory of temperature increase, the suffering will be felt everywhere, starting with the Global South." In the latest episode of Policy Voices, Lubomila Jordanova, Founder & CEO of Plan A, and He?di Sevestre, Glaciologist and Deputy Secretary of AMAP - The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme, discuss the urgent need for systemic change to mitigate climate change. This podcast from Friends of Europe explored the interconnected impacts of climate change, from the Arctic’s melting ice to the Global South’s escalating vulnerabilities. It highlighted the critical role of innovative solutions in building a sustainable future. Although COP29 Azerbaijan concluded days ago, the pressing need for action remains. How can businesses and policymakers reshape our climate, energy, and governance approach? Listen to the podcast through the comments below. #sustainability #podcast #climatechange #climateaction

?We should shy away from thinking that the EU is losing on competitiveness because we're not fast enough on sustainability.? Speaking at our #ClimateEnergySummit, Lubomila Jordanova, Founder & CEO of Plan A and EYL40 European Young Leaders, argued there is a need to make sure the EU looks at the right metrics to better understand that sustainability practices, as well as the funding that has already been distributed, are actually working. Jordanova also provided a practical example from her company, which has developed an algorithm able to calculate the correlation between competitiveness and the use of resources - ultimately, how a company can be both sustainable and also economically viable. "Companies that are growing at the fastest pace in terms of sustainability, and using more sustainable materials, are also making a lot of money," she underscored. ?? #COP29 ends with a new agreement signed – but did it deliver on its promises, or are we falling short again? At the recent COP29 Azerbaijan, global leaders made vital commitments to tackle the climate crisis. Here are the main takeaways: ? Tripling climate finance: Developed nations committed to increasing annual climate finance to $300 billion by 2035, up from the previous $100 billion target. ? Long-term financial goals: A broader aim was to mobilise $1.3 trillion annually by 2035, drawing from public and private sources, to support climate initiatives in developing countries. ? Operational carbon markets: After nearly a decade of discussions, COP29 finalised frameworks for carbon trading under the Paris Agreement, paving the way for country-to-country trading and centralised carbon crediting mechanisms. ? Enhanced transparency: A step forward in climate reporting, with 13 nations leading the way by submitting Biennial Transparency Reports, building accountability for climate action. ? Inclusion and adaptation: Key progress was made in empowering Indigenous Peoples, women, and youth with platforms for their voices in climate decisions. Efforts to address adaptation challenges, mainly for least developed countries, also saw advancement. Yet, concerns remain: ? Critics argue that the $300 billion annual commitment is insufficient to meet the immediate $1.3 trillion developing nations need to combat climate challenges effectively. ? Delays in financial mobilisation until 2035 could hinder today's urgent actions. ? A strong presence of fossil fuel lobbyists at COP29 has sparked concerns about the integrity of the agreements. Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, issued a powerful reminder: "The Paris Agreement is humanity’s life raft; nothing else exists. Promises must be kept to protect billions of lives." As of November 2024, the actual disbursement of the pledged funds remains uncertain, with specific details on the allocation and distribution yet to be clarified. While COP29 has marked progress in climate finance and policy frameworks, the effectiveness of these measures will depend on timely implementation and the fulfilment of financial commitments. What do you think? Are these steps enough to accelerate climate action, or do we need a more urgent global response? Source: United Nations
