Lindsay Glassco, CEO of Plan International Canada, doesn’t hold back on what’s holding back girls globally. “The single biggest obstacle to girls’ rights is the disruption to education,” she explained. “Education is often the first thing to go in a crisis or conflict, and when it does, girls face an increased risk of violence, early marriage and exploitation. Beyond compromising their immediate safety, a lack of access to education traps them in a cycle of poverty and disempowerment that persists for years, if not generations.” Want to know how this Women's Executive Network (WXN) Most Powerful CEO plans to help transform the non-profit sector and keep Canadians invested in championing children’s rights and equality for girls global? Zénabou was only 8 years old when she learned about a friend’s mother who was experiencing domestic violence. The injustice motivated her to want to become a lawyer when she grew up and fight for all women. Here’s why we need more people like Zénabou: Nearly one in every three women globally will experience violence in their lifetime. Every 10 minutes, a woman is killed by an intimate partner or family member. Unequal power relations, gender-based stereotypes and societal norms that undervalue women all lead to these alarming statistics. That’s why Plan International works with lawmakers, community leaders and men to create programs that equalize the power in relationships. And that’s how more girls like Zénabou can fearlessly join the mission to protect women from violence, in their communities and beyond. Watch more about Zénabou's story on Youtube: https://ow.ly/ermX50UfgM4 // Last year, our programs helped more than 270,000 people, including 82,000 girls and nearly 66,000 women, escape abuse and exploitation. This #WorldChildrensDay, we celebrate children and their curiosity, playfulness, energy and determination. Most importantly, we celebrate their futures. By ensuring all children can access their right to an education and be healthy and protected from violence, we lay the foundation for the next generation to step into and help shape a more just and prosperous world. And when we believe in and stand by children, especially girls, we can fight against a future of global poverty and build healthier, more resilient and peaceful communities. THAT’S why we support children around the world, and our child sponsors supported 147,110 children and their communities last year alone. That’s 147,110 children who see positive changes in their homes and communities, like better access to education, water and health services. Celebrate World Children’s Day today by learning more about how our Sponsorship program supports children and their communities here: https://bit.ly/3ZhaKix #ChildrensDay #ChildrensRights #ChildSponsorship #PlanEffect

We are in Azerbaijan with colleagues and youth for the COP29 Azerbaijan Climate Change Conference! By 2030, an estimated 2.2 billion people—or 26% of the global population—will live in fragile states, with the effects of climate change as a major cause. Girls and young women are among the hardest hit by climate-related crises. So we’re here at the conference to make sure their voices are heard. We’ll be joining fellow climate advocates like Ineza Umuhoza Grace and youth delegates from the Plan International Tanzania to advocate for more transparent, accessible and grant-based financing to support climate action and #climatejustice. Last week Kristen Ostling, our Senior Advisor for Policy and Advocacy, spoke at a Canadian panel at the conference focusing on humanitarian needs, development and peacebuilding – the #triplenexus. "Unfortunately, fragile and conflict-affected regions are often left behind because adaptation funding is directed primarily towards more stable areas. This neglects the communities with the greatest need for support.” Kristen shared the stage with Cooperation Canada, Canadian CSO Nexus Working Group members from Acted Canada, Save the Children Canada and Islamic Relief Canada on how to Build a Comprehensive Climate Response. Having a multitude of voices join together to advocate for the most at-risk populations was a powerful moment! You can read more about our advocacy at #COP29 at: https://ow.ly/gfRR50UacwC #COP29 #ClimateAction #ClimateChange

If you’re wondering how the gift of a bike can change a life, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan learned that firsthand on her trip to Tanzania. She met people like Ezra, who used to walk more than two hours daily to attend school. In remote regions, these long distances expose girls to dangers like violence and wildlife. The gift of a bike can transform that daily reality. Watch the video to learn more about the difference a bike can make, filmed thanks to Plan International Tanzania and Armstrong Studios. You too can give the gift of a bike for just $65. With a 4x match, this gift is multiplied to reach 5 people with life-changing bicycles! Click to the link to donate: https://bit.ly/3UM6Xqv // Distributing bikes is a key component of our education program in Tanzania. Last year, we reached over 460,000 girls. With your help, we can reach even more.
