    Today, I came across a thought-provoking video on Instagram featuring Steve Jobs. In it, he explained why hiring professional managers sometimes doesn’t work out. His point was that while they excel at managing processes, they often don’t have firsthand experience or the ability to "do" the work themselves. It struck me deeply because it resonated with how I envision Placera's approach to building opportunities. Placera was born from the belief that raw talent and the desire to learn can outshine years of experience in certain cases. Students may not always come with polished resumes or a decade of expertise, but what they bring is curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to take on challenges. These traits are what drive innovation and fresh perspectives—the exact qualities Placera wants to amplify by connecting students to meaningful internships and entry-level roles. Steve Jobs’ insight aligns with Placera’s philosophy: we don’t just want to place people in roles; we want to empower them to learn, grow, and become doers.     Hiring for Placera: Lessons from My First Experience As the founder of a startup, I recently completed my first hiring process for Placera. Managing everything myself—job postings, interviews, and offers—was a huge learning curve. While there were rewarding moments, the experience also revealed some deeper issues with how we approach hiring today. 1. No-Shows Without Communication Less than 50% of candidates I scheduled interviews with actually showed up. What’s worse is that many didn’t even bother to communicate—they simply didn’t show. I waited 15 minutes for each missed interview, hoping for a message or explanation, but often received nothing. This isn’t just frustrating; it wastes time and takes opportunities from others who genuinely wanted the role. 2. Lack of Professional Communication It wasn’t just about no-shows. Some candidates don’t know how to professionally communicate—whether it’s declining a role they’re no longer interested in or even updating about a delay. A simple, honest message can save time and frustration for everyone involved. 3. Ghosting After Acceptances While some candidates graciously and promptly accepted offers, others who expressed early enthusiasm either lied or left me on read after receiving their offer. How do you go from showing such eagerness to outright ghosting? It’s disrespectful, unprofessional, and disheartening for any employer. 4. Excessive Messaging It’s natural to follow up after an interview, but messaging 10 times in a few days is excessive. As a founder managing the entire process alone, responding to constant messages was overwhelming and took time away from ensuring fairness for every candidate. A Larger Problem These issues go beyond skill gaps. They reflect broader challenges in communication, professionalism, and respect for time. Low placement rates aren’t always about a lack of qualifications—often, they’re about how candidates engage with the process. This experience has been eye-opening. But I believe there’s room for change. How do we improve communication between employers and candidates? What can we do to ensure a smoother, more respectful process for everyone?     I’m Hiring People, Not Just Skills When it comes to hiring, skills and qualifications are important, but they’re not everything. The best employees are the ones who demonstrate a genuine connection to the role and our company beyond what’s on their resume. Here’s what I really look for: 1?? Punctuality and professionalism. Showing up early to meetings or interviews isn’t just about time—it’s about being prepared, respectful, and eager to engage. 2?? Polished presentation. Dressing appropriately and paying attention to details in appearance communicates seriousness and respect for the opportunity. 3?? Interest in the company. The candidates who stand out are those who’ve done their homework. They understand our mission, ask insightful questions, and show they’re already thinking about how they can contribute. 4?? Great communication. A smile, a nod, thoughtful questions, and active listening during the interview all indicate a candidate who is present and engaged. 5?? Follow-up matters. When someone reaches out after an interview—expressing their excitement or asking for updates—it shows they’re not just looking for any job but are genuinely interested in this one. Ultimately, I’m looking for people who show they care. Skills can be taught, but enthusiasm, professionalism, and genuine interest are qualities that make someone truly exceptional.
