In the spirit of the holiday, PJM staff members spent a special Thanksgiving lunch writing over 250 thank-you cards to the restoration workers who have been working tirelessly to provide aid and support in the wake of recent hurricanes. The cards will be mailed to these incredible individuals to show our gratitude and remind them how much their dedication means to the impacted communities and beyond. Watch Nora Swimm, Sr. Vice President – Corporate Client Services; Michael Coyle, Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer; and Risa Holland, Sr. Data Analyst II – Data Confidentiality, discuss the event.

This week, Asim Z. Haque, PJM’s Sr. Vice President – Governmental & Member Services, attended the 2024 NARUC Annual Meeting and Education Conference in Anaheim, CA and joined a panel discussion about the demand for artificial intelligence driving the need for large scale data centers, which require large amounts of power to operate continuously. The group discussed the significant electricity demand increases that come with data center proliferation and how that’s playing out across the country. Stu Bresler, Executive Vice President, Market Services and Strategy, addressed a prestigious group of Ohio business leaders Tuesday. Speaking to the Ohio Business Roundtable in Columbus, Bresler discussed the trends in the energy industry, including increasing demand for electricity nationwide and in the PJM footprint and decreasing supply. Along with interconnection queue reform, Bresler indicated that new generation is not coming online fast enough to replace power plants that are retiring. Bresler noted PJM’s number one priority is reliability for the 65 million consumers in the PJM region, including Ohio. He told the group that PJM will continue to consult with policymakers to coordinate and collaborate on states’ clean energy goals across the PJM footprint while making sure PJM’s markets incentivize new generation.

PJM reviewed three separate proposals it plans to file with FERC by the end of the year to address the urgent need for new generation while refining market rules to address specific stakeholder concerns before the next capacity auction. The proposals will be the subject of Section 205 filings that PJM intends to make with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission next month, and the session was the first of two being held to consult the stakeholder community. Stakeholders are invited to?apply?by Nov. 12 to present their views on the issues at the Nov. 21 meeting of the Members Committee. In his opening comments, Stu Bresler, Executive Vice President, Market Services and Strategy, said that the confluence of trends giving rise to the larger issue of resource adequacy are well known: unprecedented load growth, deactivation of generators whose contribution to reliability requires multiple megawatts of renewable generation to replace, and the inadequate pace of new resources connecting to the system.
