Last night’s Leaders on Leadership fireside chat with Pizza Hut CEO Aaron Powell was part history-lesson, part leadership master class. A few fun facts for the history buffs out there - founders Frank and Dan Carney got the idea for Pizza Hut in the late 1950s from a friend who read an article in the?Saturday Evening Post?about the new pizza craze sweeping the nation. They sold their first pizza from the back of a general store in Wichita, Kansas at the corner of Kellogg and Bluff, and evidently had the generous habit of gifting franchise rights to their friends via notes scribbled on table napkins. Equally awe-inspiring was Powell’s clear perspective on leadership, developed over a 30-year career that has included stints at Procter & Gamble, Bain & Co., Kimberly-Clark, and now, Pizza Hut.?Five things that really stuck with us: - “One of my biggest roles as a leader is to be there for my team and have their backs. When they know there’s someone there who cares about them over business, that’s when you get greatness.” - “Most of us have an optimism bias or a pessimism bias – know who you are. I have an optimism bias. But I have learned not to let my bias take over. When someone tells you who they are, listen. You may try to convince yourself they will become someone else, but if you think something is not going to work out, it’s not. I have learned to listen, act and get on with it.” - “When you get into bigger and bigger roles, your job is to simplify and make the goals clear. Your team has to know what you think and what to do when you’re not in the room. Have simple things you can leave them with, so they can lead and make decisions.” - “My first brand manager told me, ‘You better love your brand. If you don’t love your brand, change companies, change brands, change functions.’ I feel the same way about any company you work for, the board service you’re a part of, the non-profit you're associated with... If you truly do not have a passion for it, just don’t do it. Life is too short.” - “More data does not mean it’s more predictable.” The Leaders on Leadership series continues in April with F. We caught up with Tshegofatso Rakwena to hear her thoughts on the Pizza Hut LeadHERship initiative.? ? Tshegofatso learned about the initiative through the Youth Content Collective (YCC), which was brought to her attention by a mutual friend.? Having gone through the LeadHERship program, the most valuable skill Tshegofatso has learned is to be able to take constructive criticism and put pride and joy into what she does. She notes that it didn't sit well having your faults pointed out, but she understands the way to grow and realises how it will help her later on as a professional in any field. ? She now has a side hustle offering small businesses photography and video content services. Tshegofatso's photography expertise spans events, product shots, fashion, and portrait photography, with a passion for capturing unique moments and stories. She is delighted to be able to recruit a fellow LeadHERShip member. They have a collaborative relationship, continually learn from each other, and grow together. She believes it has been a joy to collaborate with someone who consistently brings fresh ideas. ? The versatile approach of Tshegofatso's team's allows them to cater to various clients and projects. As CEO, Tshegofatso oversees the organisation's strategic direction and creative vision.??Tshegofatso left the program understanding that there's no need to compare yourself to anyone, "Comparison is the thief of joy.
