Over a third of 100 hospitals reviewed by the HHS Office of Inspector General did not publish their prices in accordance with a federal price transparency law. The OIG checked to see if hospitals were following requirements for posting machine-readable pricing data files. Most violations pertained to disclosing the rates hospitals negotiated with insurers, metadata errors and outdated information. Five of the hospitals did not post any machine-readable files. Hospitals are pushing back against a federal proposal to change the way Medicare pays for outpatient procedures. U.S. Sens. Bill Cassidy, MD, a Louisiana Republican, and Maggie Hassan, a Democrat from New Hampshire, want to change policy so Medicare pays the same rate for outpatient services, regardless of where the services are delivered. They argue that “site-neutral” payments would save Medicare and patients billions of dollars. Hospitals counter that site-neutral payments are unfair to hospitals because they face greater licensing and regulatory requirements and serve more patients from underserved communities and those with greater health complications. They say it could lead to reduced services and longer waits. Read more in Chief Healthcare Executive: https://lnkd.in/gUKH2Z_Z I #Hospitals #Medicare #HospitalFinances #CMS #HealthPolicy

Traditional healthcare systems struggle to deliver patient-centered care while fending off retail competitors like Amazon and Walmart. Retail disruption was the topic of a recent HealthLeaders Summit. Leaders Diedra Kramer of Sutter Health and Haddas Lev of Denver Health discussed the challenges of retaining patients and meeting their service expectations. “Consumers (will) consider, select and stay loyal to something that’s the easiest to navigate, interact and transact with,” said Kramer, who added that healthcare systems will have to adjust.
