In 2023, nonprofit hospitals and health systems had an average of fewer than 200 days of cash on hand, the lowest level in a decade. A recent S&P Global Ratings report attributed that to inflation and limited strengthening of reserves but noted that systems increased capital spending, with some taking on new debt. Median operating margins ranged from 2.5% to -2.7%. Healthcare providers in California will soon have to disclose their use of generative AI for patient communications. That requirement is part of a flurry of recent AI-related laws the state passed. Another requirement is that insurers?consider California members’ medical history and clinical factors when using AI for prior authorization and coverage decisions. They must ensure AI tools are equitably applied, and a licensed clinician must decide whether services are medically necessary. The legislation is backed by the California Hospital Association.
