Do you have a green thumb? Somehow, everyone I know does, except me. I say that, but at this very moment, I have three live plants in my house — sadly, this is my record and I’m proud of it. Thanks to my lack of luck, I perked up when the pastor at my church gave the children’s sermon. All the kids were gathered, and a mostly dead plant was sitting on the stool. He shared all the ways he tried to?revive the plant: more water, reading to it, adding some vitamins, etc. As he was going on and on about how hard it was to bring back, one of the kids asked, “Why didn’t you just do all those things to start with?” Good question, kid! That was my biggest takeaway from the message as well. Why wait until it is too late to give something the attention we should all along? We should be constantly asking ourselves how we can show appreciation for our customers, our friends, and our family members. If only we could maintain the same level of enthusiasm we do early in any relationship, everyone would thrive. (A reminder I’m also using on my?houseplants. ??) Broadband and Electric Utilities: A Customer Experience Reality Check Let’s not sugarcoat it—customer experience (CX) isn’t just important for broadband and electric utilities—it’s the battlefield where loyalty is won or lost. In an era where communities are making greater demands than ever before, your ability to deliver a seamless, value-driven CX determines whether customers see you as essential or expendable. Here’s the hard truth: broadband providers obsess over speed and reliability, but what happens when the Wi-Fi goes down and customers can’t get a straight answer? Similarly, electric utilities pride themselves on keeping the lights on, but how do you think customers feel when they’re left in the dark—literally and figuratively—about outages or rising rates? To succeed, you can’t just offer great service. You need to anticipate problems, communicate like your livelihood depends on it (because it does even if you’re a monopoly today), and create emotional loyalty. People remember how you make them feel—whether it’s valued, frustrated, or ignored. So, here’s the challenge: stop thinking of CX as an afterthought.
