Congratulations to the team at Pittsburgh International Airport on the occasion of the Allegheny County Airport Authority's 25th anniversary. Earlier this week, Senator Devlin Robinson marked the occasion with a Senate citation and recognized Chief Government & Corporate Affairs Officer Vince Gastgeb and Director of Corporate & Government Relations Tyler Laughlin from the floor. Once Allegheny County’s Department of Aviation (yes, really), the authority's creation reshaped how PIT and Allegheny County Airport (AGC) operate. The authority model has allowed leadership to operate cost-efficiently, has attracted the specialized workforce needed to operate a modern airport, shielded county taxpayers from airport debt, and allowed the agency to be nimble, quickly identifying and acting on new opportunities. The authority led the comeback from the collapse of US Airways, bringing PIT into a new era as an origin and destination airport; since the de-hub in 2004, PIT has grown from 37 to 62 nonstop destinations and from 10 to 15 airlines. Nonstop routes have increased, so have traveler numbers, with PIT realizing its highest traffic in 20 years at nearly one million (1M) passengers in June 2024. ACAA has balanced business and traveler experiences to great success. Today, the "old" airport is going through a terminal modernization project, and the authority has settled into a leadership role in the aviation industry, with a global reputation as innovative leaders in energy and sustainability, accessibility and workforce development. Congrats on 25 years - and here's to many, many more serving the Pittsburgh region.
