The department has 31 full-time, tenured, or tenure-track faculty plus nine appointment-stream faculty whose expertise spans across a broad range of topics, including advanced manufacturing and design, energy and power technology, soft matter and solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, computational and data-enabled engineering, smart materials and systems, controls, acoustics, and nano-technology. The research program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science is significant with over $8 million in annual research expenditures from projects funded by government agencies and industry.

MEMS PhD Student Jun Young Hong has been honored with the Graduate Excellence in Materials Science (GEMS) Sapphire Award from the American Ceramic Society!?? Jun Young’s research focuses on magnetic field sensing materials and devices, particularly Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) single crystal fibers, and the integration of NV center nanodiamond-polymer in a fiber-optic platform for quantum sensing applications.

The Pittsburgh chapter of the Society of Aeronautics and Rocketry launched their rocket, Panther X, at the 2024 Spaceport America Cup in New Mexico! This marks the University of Pittsburgh's first entry into the world's largest intercollegiate rocket engineering conference and competition. Panther X is an 11-foot-tall, 75-pound rocket powered by a rocket motor fully designed and built by members of Pitt SOAR. The rocket reached an altitude of 10,000 feet before making a smooth landing back on the ground. Congratulations to all members of the team!

This past Saturday, we hosted our 2024 rollout event where we unveiled our first fully electric vehicle, PR-036! We want to thank all the friends, family, alumni, sponsors, and university officials who attended our event. As we work through our first EV season, we wouldn't be where we are today without everyone's unwavering support.
The Spring 2024 Design?Expo?is on the horizon and we need volunteer judges! Expo will take place on?Thursday, April 18, 2024?from 5-8:30pm at the University Club with 92 student projects this semester!?If you are a faculty member, grad student, alumna/alumnus or friend with a passion for any engineering discipline, we welcome you to register! ? The Design?EXPO?is a showcase of semester-long student projects from several departments and classes.?As a?judge, you will evaluate 5 projects within your research interests on the project’s ability to resolve a design problem; approach; innovation; presentation/communication; and technical performance/overall impact. The evening ends with an award ceremony; judges are free to leave upon completion of their assignment but welcome to stay for the awards.
