?? Exciting news for social procurement in NSW!
The final two reports from the NSW Procurement Inquiry have been released. It's fantastic to see many of our recommendations reflected in these reports, as we'd contributed to the inquiry with a submission and formal evidence.?
These reports bring significant improvements to how procurement is managed, with a strong focus on social enterprises, environmental sustainability, and supporting small businesses. The recommendations are set to make a real social and economic impact across NSW! ??
Here are some key takeaways:
?? Value for money: Expanded to include social outcomes like job creation, local industry growth, and sustainability.
?? Transparency: Lowering the contract disclosure threshold to $100,000 to enhance transparency in government procurement.
?? Support for SMEs: Removing barriers for small-medium enterprises and simplifying tender processes.
?? Collaborative tendering: Encouraging small businesses to team up for bigger projects.
?? Social procurement: Strengthening the Procurement Policy Framework and associated policies to achieve social procurement outcomes, including by:?
? setting specific targets for the procurement of social enterprises?
? considering how certification schemes could be adopted to ensure the procurement of businesses that achieve social impact?
? collaborating and consulting across relevant government agencies.
?? Post-award compliance: Ensuring social enterprises play a key role throughout contracts, not just at the start.
?? Supporting innovation: Boosting local business innovation through government procurement opportunities.
?? What does this mean for social enterprises and SMEs?
This is a game-changer! The recommendations will make procurement more accessible, transparent, and impactful. We are excited to see the positive changes these will bring for local businesses and communities. Thank you to Social Enterprise Council of NSW & ACT (SECNA) who also contributed to this inquiry, and it's been great working together to grow the sector. ?
The NSW Government has already committed to key actions, like expanding “Value for Money” to include social factors and lowering barriers for SMEs. This is just the beginning!
