The recent decision by several UK police forces to withdraw from X (formerly Twitter) strikes a chord with me. Years ago, I was one of the first to champion the integration of Twitter into UK policing. It was a hard-fought journey that involved not only winning hearts and minds but also demonstrating the immense value social media could bring to law enforcement. I vividly remember the challenges: drafting policies from scratch, training officers unfamiliar with social media, and addressing concerns about engaging with the public in such an open forum. It wasn’t just about adopting a new communication tool; it was about transforming the way we connected with our communities. Seeing this shift away from social platforms prompts important questions about the future of public engagement. The digital landscape has become increasingly complex, with concerns over misinformation and harmful content. Yet, the core mission remains the same—fostering trust and transparency with the public. As we reconsider our approaches, it’s essential to explore new avenues that uphold these values while adapting to the changing times. This withdrawal isn’t just about stepping back from a platform—it’s a call to re-evaluate how public institutions interact with social media in a way that upholds safety, integrity, and community trust. It raises important questions about the responsibility of social platforms in moderating content and the impact of their policies on public services. For me, it’s crucial to consider alternative avenues for community engagement that prioritise both effective communication and the well-being of the public.
