"Women are now just as likely as men to be victims of violent crime. They now account for more than a quarter of adult arrests. The rate of women’s #JailIncarceration has been edging up; the men’s rate has been going down. While men still make up a disproportionate share of people in the #CriminalJusticeSystem, these troubling trends for women underlie the launch today of a new Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) initiative https://lnkd.in/giXGh_tx to document and raise awareness of the distinctive #NeedsOfWomen in the criminal justice system and build consensus for #EvidenceBasedReforms that enhance safety, health, and justice."? #CJreform #IncarceratedWomen

Happy Friday- #TGIF! We are proud to spotlight and congratulate Melissa Wright, SUDP, who runs our #InJailPrograms in #Spokane. Last August, Melissa hit a 20-year milestone of serving others as a chemical dependency professional. She is a #SuperStar! Melissa said, "Back in 2019 was when I actually landed my dream job with Pioneer - a special little program run by the Pioneer Counseling - Emerson Clinic outpatient clinic called “The Innovative Project.” I’ve been running this project for five years now and it seems to have surpassed its name as it’s no longer innovative or just a project. It is a dependable option for persons incarcerated in either of the #SpokaneCounty jails to get #SubstanceUseDisorder assessment for early release into treatment." Melissa continued, "When I started the Innovative Project, my goals were to streamline the process of referrals to assessment - to patient placement from jail and into treatment. I successfully complete approximately 400 assessments every year and place approximately 250 people per year in varying treatment levels and facilities." Melissa added, "I have to share a huge shout out to our Emerson #PeerSupport team that does a lot of transports for innovative clients from #jail to treatment. Also, Carol Spurgin and Laura Lloyd-Owen who help me with a lot of my admin work - and of course my program director, Tanya Sturm, who hired me back in 2019 and has supported me throughout my time to make this program as strong as it is now." It has been my absolute pleasure to be working for an organization that shares the same passions and vision that I do for treating individuals with #SUD and #MentalHealthDisorders. Cheers to another 20 years!" Tanya Sturm, Emerson Clinic's Director II, stated, "Melissa is an incredible clinician, she has a wealth of knowledge which she graciously shares with other clinicians. She has a stellar reputation with all walks of referents that count on her to assess their clients while they are incarcerated at Spokane County Jail and/or Geiger. She is meticulous with her organization and tracking her program outcomes. Melissa works independently, she is self-sufficient and trustworthy. Emerson Clinic is proud to have her on the team." #AppreciationPost #20YearsServingOthers #TreatmentSavesLives #ClinicianQueen #TreatmentReferrals

Not something to celebrate for #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth.
November is Native American Heritage Month. Sadly, Native people are consistently overrepresented in the US criminal legal system, accounting for only 1% of the total population but 3% of the incarcerated population. It's also important to note that for many years, data on the incarceration of Native people has not been easily accessible. More transparency must be provided in the coming years to better inform and target advocacy that reduces Native incarceration and confronts glaring racial disparities in the criminal legal system. #incarceration #criminaljustice #data
