Resiliency. Some folks are born with a temperament that favors it, while for others, it’s something shaped over time by life’s inevitable ups and downs. Most of us fall somewhere in between. But whether it’s more of an instinct or a learned skill, resiliency is essential, both personally and professionally. And as any seasoned business owner knows, you have to choose when to sweat it and when to, as I like to say to my kids, “pitch it in the ditch-it niche.” This weekend, my kids (10 and 4) had a lemonade stand. All was going well until a little mishap occurred: the lemonade pitcher tipped over mid-service. My 10-year-old panicked, ran away in tears, upset that "everything was ruined." My 4-year-old, on the other hand, bolted inside, yelling for more lemonade. The problem? We were out. He went back outside, calmly informed the customers, and while they were disappointed, he didn’t let it stop him. Without missing a beat, he suggested they have another lemonade stand the next day. My daughter’s reaction is a common one—panic, frustration, and a sense of defeat. Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there. But it reminded me of a great quote by Marquise Goodwin: “If you had $86,400 in your bank account and someone stole $10 from you, would you throw the remaining $86,390 away? No. We have 86,400 seconds each day. Don’t let a negative 10 seconds ruin your entire day.” In business, I feel like my lemonade is constantly spilling. There’s always some new challenge, bad news, or a 50% price increase from a vendor without adding any value (looking at you, Intuit!). But the key to resiliency is learning when to get upset and when to pitch it in the ditch-it niche and move on with your day. When you run to the problem, you face challenges head-on, building the resiliency muscle each time. It’s a value we can all apply to our work and our lives.
