  • In the wake of the Civil War, the United States witnessed a new wave of audacious crimes—armed daytime bank robbery. Until the mid-1860s, crime against banks consisted of night-time burglaries, sneak thefts, forgeries, counterfeits, and other schemes that were conducted in a shroud of mystery. It was a sign of the times; outlaws were becoming increasingly daring, emboldened by the turmoil of post-war America. Historians often cite the Clay County Savings Association heist, in Liberty, Missouri in February 1866 as the nation's first bank robbery, allegedly committed by associates of the infamous James-Younger gang. The robbers eluded capture and were never positively identified. As the son of Allan Pinkerton, founder of Pinkerton's National Detective Agency, Robert "the Eye" Pinkerton observed that criminals of this new era did not just focus on banks. These “hold up men” menaced trains, express cars, and stagecoaches. And in each instance, the tales were harrowing. One of the earliest bank robberies investigated by Pinkerton's took place at the National Village Bank of Bowdoinham, Maine, burglary on June 22, 1866. In the early hours before official banking hours, a group of seasoned and armed criminals forcefully entered the home of the bank's cashier. Under the threat of violence against his family, the cashier turned over his keys, accompanied the desperadoes to the bank, and admitted them to the bank premises, where they stole approximately $80,000. Once the robbers had the money, they took the cashier home and fled, leaving him and his family tied up. The Agency, summoned by the beleaguered bank, collaborated with law enforcement from Maine to New to successfully identify, capture, and convict the robbers. Pinkerton. We never sleep.

  • Pinkerton's Embedded Subject Matter Experts, also known as Pinkerton Dedicated Professionals (PDPs), are integral to our client's risk management strategies. These specialists are fully immersed in the client's environment, aligning closely with their culture and objectives to mitigate risks. The PDP initiative is built on a long-standing Pinkerton tradition of embedding experts across industries since the 1880s. Our first PDP, Thomas A. Gallagher, set the standard by traveling with one of the biggest circuses of the day from 1880 to 1883. In the 1800s, circuses often had a mixed reputation. They were perceived as both a source of wonder and entertainment and as gathering places for unsavory characters looking to take advantage of the crowds. The transient nature of these traveling shows also led to a perception of lawlessness and disorder, as they were not rooted in the communities they visited. Circus proprietors, showmen with a knack for marketing, transformed circuses into respectable, educational spectacles to combat this negative image. Ministers endorsed the shows as virtuous. Pinkerton detectives were brought in to travel with the shows and protect circusgoers from grifters, pickpockets, and other thieves—most of whom a seasoned Pinkerton would have recognized on sight. Our early PDPs became so much part of the circus culture that they were even listed with the regular employees in the route books published at the end of the season. This enduring tradition of embedding expertise, exemplified by our PDPs, is a testament to Pinkerton's unwavering commitment to security and risk management. The show always goes on—safely and without interruption.

  • It's Women's History Month, and while we're tipping our hats to the fierce females of yesteryear—say Kate Warne—we need to include the covert Lady Pinks who operated under the radar—literally. Most Pinkerton files read like a secret agent's dream: operatives known only by initials, surnames, or Agency-assigned codenames. Why the mystery? It was all part of the plan "to obviate any possibility of the operative being recognized," allowing them to uphold justice, safeguard society from the clutches of crime, and protect everything from jewels to the nation's honor—just as Allan Pinkerton, the OG detective, envisioned. Pinkerton operatives—especially the ladies—were the embodiment of discretion. They were instructed to never talk about their work. In one high-profile case, the Agency broke protocol and allowed the media to know the gender of two covert women operatives, or “shadows.” Per standard operating procedures, shadows were, most often, deployed in pairs, and these two in particular, together. From all reports, they were spectacular at their jobs. When no one else could find the fugitive bank robber of the First National Bank of Milltown, NJ in December 1920, the Agency deployed the experts. In early January 1921, these women found the criminal’s wife, who was hiding in New York City, and they proceeded to shadow her for several days until she unknowingly led them to her husband in Providence, RI. The arrest? Picture-perfect. A train station, an embrace, a stolen kiss, and justice served! Then, like a plot twist straight out of a noir film, then two women simply disappeared back into the shadows, their legacy etched in the annals of Pinkerton lore. Intrigued? Dive into the full story and celebrate the Pinkerton operatives—women and men—who wrote history from the shadows → https://pnk.tn/4ss #175 #Pinkerton175 #WomensHistoryMonth
