Why Socks in the Freezer (and Other Life Lessons) Matter in IDD Care
At Cedar Creek Lodge, life is full of moments that make us laugh, learn, and grow. From the quirky to the profound, supporting individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) means embracing every unique personality, every challenge, and every success story.
Take “Chris,” for example, who once decided his socks belonged in the freezer because, as he said, “Cold feet are a mood.” A little unconventional? Sure. But with the right support (and a great pair of warm socks), Chris now uses his creativity to organize his room in ways that make sense to him—and to his feet.
Or “Susan,” who was determined to outsmart her bedtime. After negotiating with her favorite stuffed animal, she triumphantly declared she’d only be sleeping two nights a week. With a little help from our team and Athra Systems Behavioral Health, Susan now has a bedtime routine that works for everyone—and she’s even teaching her stuffed animal how to stick to it!
But it’s not all socks and bedtime debates. Sometimes, the challenges are more serious:
? “Alex,” who struggles with social anxiety, worked closely with our team and Athra to feel confident enough to attend group activities. Today, Alex is the reigning karaoke champion in our community.
? “Jamie,” who felt overwhelmed by sudden changes in routine, now uses calming techniques we’ve worked on together. Not only has Jamie learned to adapt, but he’s also mentoring newer residents who feel similarly.
At Cedar Creek Lodge, we see every challenge as an opportunity to learn and every resident as a story waiting to unfold. That’s why our partnership with Athra Behavioral Health is so essential. Their onsite presence ensures we’re able to provide personalized, real-time mental health support that meets each resident’s unique needs—whether that’s tackling anxiety, building social skills, or yes, figuring out better homes for socks.
Our model is simple but powerful: laughter, love, and learning go hand in hand. We celebrate every victory, no matter how small, because they all add up to something big: independence, confidence, and a thriving life.
So, if you’re wondering what mental health care in an IDD community looks like, it’s a little bit of everything: frozen socks, bedtime routines, karaoke nights, and breakthroughs that change lives. At Cedar Creek Lodge, we’re here for it all—and we can’t wait to share these moments with you and your family.
Let’s connect and show you how we’re redefining care for individuals with IDD—one sock, one smile, and one story at a time.
