Last week, Pinegrove Venture Partners hosted a dynamic dinner in Santa Monica, bringing together founders, investors, and thought leaders from the defense tech, infrastructure, and real estate sectors. The conversation centered on the growing intersection of innovation and real assets, with a spotlight on the accelerating flow of capital into defense technology. We’ve seen firsthand the power of this trend through our portfolio companies like SpaceX and Shield AI, which are rapidly expanding in the defense, government, and commercial sectors. This growth highlights the broader trend of increasing demand for next-gen tech solutions—driven by geopolitical tensions and a need for stronger cybersecurity, encryption, and supply chain protection. Key insights from the dinner included the role of satellite technologies expanding beyond defense into supply chain, transportation, and energy transition, creating new frontiers for growth. We also discussed the explosion of geospatial data and AI, driving a new wave of innovation in real asset sectors. With these technologies, we are seeing a revolution in how we engage with the physical world, from infrastructure to climate solutions. The SpaceX ecosystem also emerged as a key theme, with many leaders sharing how their experiences at SpaceX have shaped their approach to scaling companies and building high-performance teams. Southern California continues to be a hotbed of innovation, offering unique resources for defense tech and hardware/software startups. We’re thrilled about the immense potential at the intersection of innovation and real assets, and grateful to our partners at Brookfield, Silicon Valley Bank, and Marlinspike for making this event a success. The future is full of transformative opportunities, and we’re excited to continue supporting forward-thinking founders and investors shaping this next wave of innovation. Today, we’re thrilled to announce a major milestone: the formalization of our strategic lending relationship with Silicon Valley Bank, now a division of First Citizens Bank. This relationship not only reaffirms our long-standing collaboration but also strengthens the core origination engine behind our private credit strategy. Over the past 13 years, Pinegrove and SVB have worked side by side to extend over $10 billion in venture debt across approximately 550 loans. This renewed relationship will continue to fuel innovation in venture debt solutions, and is expected to deploy a combined $2.5 billion in loans over the coming years. Pinegrove Venture Partners' Gaurav Mathur joined Samir Kaji on the Venture Unlocked podcast to discuss the evolving VC secondaries landscape. They covered: → Market Growth & Liquidity: VC AUM has soared to $4T (with $3T unrealized), driving a need for stronger liquidity options. →?Tight Distributions: Capital called vs. distributed hit a record 4.5x last year; just 15% of 2015–2019 funds have reached 1x DPI. →?Longer Timelines: Companies now stay private ~11 years on average (up 43% post-GFC), reshaping venture investment. →?Investor Diversification: Non-VC investors now make up 35–40% of direct investment (vs. 15% historically). →?Future Outlook: Private markets are expected to grow from $13 trillion to over $20 trillion by 2030, with VC and growth equity fueling tech innovation.
