May 9 was National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. Open conversations about mental health are important for people of all ages to take part in, and children's literature offers an accessible space for this dialogue. “All About Anxiety,” a children’s picture book written by Carrie Lewis and illustrated by Sophia Touliatou, is a great example of how books for young readers can be great resources for more serious topics. “All About Anxiety” reminds readers that their feelings are valid and offers skills and tools for dealing with anxiety and discomfort. With a reassuring tone, vivid illustrations, and a variety of helpful tops and resources, this book presents a safe and reaffirming space for readers of all ages. ?Read the full review here: https://lnkd.in/d9Nkm_ib Have a book you’d like us to review or promote? Today is National Teacher Appreciation Day! A good teacher, in traditional classrooms or in any area of life, can make an incredible impact on the lives and learning of the people they instruct. We at Pine Reads Review are celebrating the amazing educators in our lives by highlighting a review of “Mightier Than the Sword,” a children's picture book written by Rochelle Melander and illustrated by Melina Ontiveros. This novel celebrates the power of learning by telling the stories of inspiring historical figures who have taught the world so much. With tales of people like Martin Luther to Sojourner Truth, young readers are able to learn from and engage with different historical narratives, all with important lessons attached. On this day, and on every day, we should take the time to celebrate the contributions and teachings of the educators in our daily lives and all the people who came before us! Happy International Haiku Poetry Day! Haikus, and all manner of poems, are engaging and creative methods of storytelling. As such, when poems are combined with vivid illustrations in picture books, the narratives being conveyed are made all the more fun and interesting. Poetry in picture books has existed for a while, as evidenced by the work of authors like Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss. We at PRR wanted to highlight both the history of this practice as well as some of the newer and more diverse authors experimenting with this combination. Titles like “Ohana Means Family” and “Brown Sugar Babe” are wonderful examples of the ways that modern, representative stories can be told through poetry and pictures.
