There seems to be a seismic shift coming for many ad agencies, especially the big players. Some big shops and holding companies may be wondering what happened. Insert Titanic analogy here - we know who wins. So what is the future for ad agencies? Surely the answer is - ‘small’, as in smaller creative and strategically focused outfits that are nimble and can pivot on a dime and not hit that iceberg. Small can navigate quickly. Big, well, we know what happens. Small is the new big. Of course, I would say this as I build my small creative studio…but I’m not the only one. We’re seeing more new shops emerging. Only this week, Corinna Falusi, ex-CCO of Mother NY, launched her new offering in New York - Birthday. It is not a traditional model...thankfully. We need more different thinkers and different business models. It doesn’t take a cast of thousands to do what we do. It takes a handful of experienced minds to navigate what a client needs (the strategy part) and then get to work making some ideas happen (the creative part). That’s what we do summed up in one sentence. But, as noted, it takes ‘experienced’ people to do this well, within ever shorter time constraints, and hit the nail on the head for the client. This is where the big agencies have slipped up - they keep letting go of their experienced people to save money. But if clients start walking away from them what money do you have to save? I’ve written, and talked on podcasts, for years about my ‘band model’ approach that I believe is how an agency should be structured. It’s simple. Look at a big successful band, I have used U2 in the past (it doesn’t matter if you like them or not, it’s just an example). A quick Google search shows U2’s net worth at over $1B. They are, for all intents and purposes, a creative company, made up of five people - four on stage and a manager. They don’t sit around in offices all day, they don’t even live in the same cities or countries. They come up with ideas and share them via technology - remote working seems to work for them. And yes sometimes they even work with brands, sound familiar? They are four creative people and a business/strategic person - the manager. ? When they want to record an album they hire a studio, an engineer, and a producer. They may hire some extra musicians too if they need to. They hire a photographer and artist for the album design and a video director for the music videos. When they want to go on tour they hire the road crew, the equipment, trucks, etc and rent the venues. ? The point I am getting to is that they have very low day-to-day overheads and scale up when needed…that is what I believe an “agency” (for want of a better term) should look like. So, the future isn’t all bleak - it’s small. And small can be a good thing - fewer icebergs to worry about. #creativity #advertising #adverrtisingagencies #creativecareers #creativecareers #creativedirection
