Why Gen Z is the Loneliest Generation—and How We Can Change That ?? Did you know that 73% of Gen Z report feeling lonely, more than any other generation? Loneliness has quietly become the "L word" we don’t talk about, despite its growing impact on mental health. Growing up in a primarily digital world has created a paradox for Gen Z: constant connectivity yet deep social isolation. At Pie, we think we need to change the stigma. Loneliness is a quiet crisis. "Loneliness is more than just isolation: It’s the subjective experience of craving more social interaction than you currently have." By bridging the gap between the digital and the physical, we’re focused on bringing people together in meaningful ways. ?? The future is bright if we focus on building products that prioritize IRL connection over screen time. Together, we can rewrite the narrative on loneliness and create a more connected world. #GenZ #Loneliness #MentalHealth #PieSocial #DigitalToIRL #InRealLifeConnections https://lnkd.in/gUHQcqYd

?? Why do we want to build a startup for the soul? Social media profoundly changed the way we connect, turning the digital world into a doom-scroll, where we watch snippets of social scenes through screens, rather than actively live it. It's easier than ever to see what others are doing, but harder to turn those glimpses into real memories with friends. For #GenZ, who grew up with the IRL/ Online barriers blurred, this can feel like both a gift and a curse— potential connections to many, yet close intimate relationships to few. It is the growing desire to bring those online interactions #IRL that was the driver (we're punny sometimes) for Pie. We believe doing things you enjoy with people you love should be as easy as calling an uber ?? How did you meet your closest friends? Share your thoughts below! ?? Bonobos founder Andy Dunn wants to end social isolation. His new social app Pie added $11.5M in a Series A led by Forerunner Ventures, with participation from Twitter and Medium cofounder Ev Williams and others — bringing its total funding to $24M. Over the past 20 years, average time spent with friends has fallen by 20 hours per month — and 49% of Americans have three or fewer close pals. Declared an epidemic by the surgeon general, loneliness has become a focus for startups like The Nudge, RealRoots, Tribe, and The Breakfast.

As a society, we've made strides in moving the mental health conversation forward, but there’s still work to be done. ???Mental health at work is no longer a “nice-to-have”—it’s essential ...?? We're proud to see our founder, Andy Dunn leading that conversation alongside Elyse Cohen, and LINUS KARLSSON at Fast Company Innovation Festival. We believe it is time we all move beyond surface-level wellness programs. Leaders who care about mental health should be: ??? Setting core values: creating a respectful work environment. ??Foster transparent dialogue: Set clear expectations on workloads and communication, ensuring employees feel supported and balanced. ??Incorporate mental health education: Equip teams with training on mental health basics, creating a culture of understanding and support. At Pie, we’re working to get people “addicted to real life” again—because deep relationships and support matter (in and out of work) #MentalHealthMatters #Leadership #WorkplaceCulture https://lnkd.in/gGiZ7bCg

What a whirlwind last few days for Andy Dunn and the entire Pie team. Somehow they juggled a public launch of their product, a huge WSJ article, and having their entire team come out to Park City for our CXO Summit. We can't wait to see you all change the world.
At our startup Pie we are on a mission to defeat social isolation. According to the surgeon general, we are spending 24 fewer hours per month together than we were 20 years ago. This is as dangerous as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. We are building a social app to combat this problem. The job to be done is to make it easy to make friends. Our vision is for a world where doing things you enjoy with people you like should be as easy as calling an Uber. I am building Pie personally because I experienced the social isolation pandemic myself. As a new dad in a new city (Chicago), my life was filled with two forms of Greek love: eros (romantic love) and storge (parent/child love). But I was lacking in two others: philia (platonic love) and agape (the love of the tribe). I was digitally addicted. I felt frozen in amber. Here is my start with why: https://lnkd.in/gEa7WDXs This morning the The Wall Street Journal shared this exclusive story on our Series A round and our Chicago launch. The $11.5 million round was led by my friend and longtime collaborator Kirsten Green of Forerunner -- with meaningful participation from a mentor, friend and personal hero Ev Williams, cofounder of Twitter, and founding CEO of Medium. We were delighted that Jason Heltzer of Origin Ventures and Renata Quintini of Renegade Partners also participated meaningfully in the A. We're also grateful today to longtime investor Charles Hudson of Precursor Ventures. My favorite quote in the article is from Ev: "Pie is competing for the time that people are off their screens—not on them." Our corporate motto is more social, less media. If you have a friend in Chicago who is looking for more in their social life, or if you are that person, our web and mobile app is here: https://plan.getpie.app/ My cup overflows with gratitude. Thank you to the IRL Pie team in Chicago that now is. Sam Burke Gustavo Casas Martha Glodz Beatriz de Souza Kauffmann Brittanie Jakubowich Hunter Husar Francisco Martinez Samir Mirza Bridget M. Thompson Thank you to the remote/hybrid Pie team that once was. Cofounder Jen Greenwood Halle Gold Eric Rubin Kishan Patel Rob Bruce Kinnara Anindita Ond?ej Korol Daniel Pecher and Wolasi Konu Thank you to (some of) our Pie angels and advisors. Evan Sharp Scott Belsky Sam Yagan Tim Kendall Nikita Bier Marc Lore Monica Royer and my parents Usha and Charley Dunn. Thank you to OG Pie cofounders Erik Allebest, Alixandra Freedberg and Becca Harris Lewy. There is no pumpkin in this Pie without you, is there? Thank you to our counsel Megan Baier of Wilson Sonsini. And thank you Manuela Zoninsein. You are my inspiration and the most tenacious entrepreneur I know.
