A balanced diet is essential for physical and mental well-being, and Pierce County Human Services' Aging and Disability Resources offers nutrition programs to help older adults thrive. In 2024, 90,358 meals were served to 3,761 older adults at congregate meal sites, and 3,081 seniors received farmers market vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local vendors. Through these efforts, we’re promoting healthy living and fostering connections within our community. Pierce County Human Services invites local veterans to attend the Veteran Service Officer (VSO) Workshop, designed to provide critical insights into the VA claim process. Whether you are filing a new claim or looking to strengthen an existing one, this workshop will give you the knowledge needed to navigate the process effectively. The first workshop will take place on April 8 from 1–2 p.m. at 3602 Pacific Avenue, Suite 200, Tacoma, WA 98418. Registration is required. Workshops will continue on the second Tuesday of every month, offering ongoing support to veterans seeking to access this important information and assistance. Participants will receive guidance from experts on how to maximize their benefits and will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with an accredited VSO for personalized assistance. ?? It's National Preschool Teacher Appreciation Day, and we want to give a huge shout out to teachers in our Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) program! ECEAP is a free, state-funded preschool for children ages 3-4. In Pierce County, we have eight ECEAP classrooms through the County, including a dual language (English and Spanish) program in South Hill. Joan Whitlock has been a beacon of kindness and advocacy for the elderly in long-term care for nearly two decades right here in Pierce County. As a dedicated ombudsman, she listens, supports and ensures that residents' voices are heard. Her warmth and compassion have made her a beloved part of the community. Joan is the recipient of the 2025 Volunteer of the Year Award and we are so grateful for her 19 years of volunteering! ??

Over the weekend, we recognized and celebrated volunteers across Pierce County who have given their time, talent and expertise to Pierce County government at our annual volunteer recognition event. The Pierce County 4x4 Search and Rescue Team is made up of dedicated volunteers who drop everything to help find missing people in the most difficult-to-reach places. Whether it's deep in the woods, up a mountain, or across rough terrain, they go where others can't and safely bring people home. Congratulations to this team for winning the 2025 Group of the Year Award! ??

Be a part of local efforts to address housing affordability, attainability, and accessibility in Pierce County and join our team as a Social Service Program Specialist 2! In this role, you will provide support to the South Sound Housing Affordability Partners (SSHA3P) Executive Board and be the liaison for the SSHA3P Advisory Board. Analyze and research best practices and policies in land use, affordable housing, and residential development issues while maintaining strong relationships with member governments.
