Joan Whitlock has been a beacon of kindness and advocacy for the elderly in long-term care for nearly two decades right here in Pierce County. As a dedicated ombudsman, she listens, supports and ensures that residents' voices are heard. Her warmth and compassion have made her a beloved part of the community. Over the weekend, we recognized and celebrated volunteers across Pierce County who have given their time, talent and expertise to Pierce County government at our annual volunteer recognition event. The Pierce County 4x4 Search and Rescue Team is made up of dedicated volunteers who drop everything to help find missing people in the most difficult-to-reach places. Whether it's deep in the woods, up a mountain, or across rough terrain, they go where others can't and safely bring people home. Congratulations to this team for winning the 2025 Group of the Year Award! ??

Access to safe and affordable housing is essential for building strong, resilient communities. Shiloh New Life Apartments are bringing 60 new affordable housing units to Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood, made possible by over $5 million in funding from Pierce County Human Services. These units are designed for those earning 30-50% of the area median income (AMI), which means a household of four earning less than $57,900 annually or a household of two earning less than $46,350 annually may qualify. Half of the units are reserved for people experiencing homelessness, offering much-needed support to some of the most vulnerable members of the community. These homes offer stability and opportunity while keeping residents connected to essential services and public transportation. Learn more by visiting their website: liveatshiloh.com ??
