关于我们
The Piedmont Park Conservancy is a member and donor-funded nonprofit organization working in partnership with the city of Atlanta to ensure Piedmont Park is an iconic park for all neighborhoods of metro Atlanta.?Since 1989, we have invested over $66 million in capital improvements for Piedmont Park. Today, the Conservancy requires over $3.5 million dollars in donations every year in order to manage and enhance Piedmont Park and its programs. The Conservancy contributes to the Park’s beautification through detail-focused landscaping, volunteer projects and capital improvements. Major concentration areas include the Active Oval, dog parks, pool, EnviroVentures Camp, tours, facility rentals, Green Market and field trips. Additionally, we consult on best management practices for Park events and festivals to protect Piedmont Park and ensure a positive experience for all users.

Urban green spaces like Atlanta’s Piedmont Park are assets as incredible as they are irreplaceable. Can you imagine trying to amass a 200-acre parcel today in the middle of the city? If it were possible to get property owners to sell, the cost would be in the tens of billions of dollars—or more. It would be hard for a commercial interest to pull that together, let alone a government to do it for a park. Fortunately, Atlanta’s leader had the foresight to create Piedmont Park in 1904 when they purchased the land from an early pioneer family. Then it was outside the city limits and considered almost too far away from the city center to even bother acquiring. Yet can we imagine Atlanta without Piedmont Park? It’s not only a beautiful greenspace, but an asset for our mental and physical health, the economy and the strength of our community. Preserving and strengthening it takes buy-in from us all and a willingness to reach consensus on its importance and its future. A growing body of research highlights the connection between urban green spaces and improved mental health. Studies have found that spending as little as 20 minutes in a park can significantly lower stress hormones like cortisol. In urban centers like Atlanta, where the pace of life can be fast, Piedmont Park and our other great parks provide a vital escape that fosters relaxation and rejuvenation. Beyond health, parks enrich the beauty and desirability of neighborhoods. Properties near well-maintained green spaces see a 5-20% increase in value, according to a report by the National Recreation and Park Association. That translates into greater tax revenues that can be reinvested into community development. Despite these benefits, parks are often underappreciated. Building widespread public support for them often requires hard work—engaging residents across a broad spectrum of background about how parks contribute to public health, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. My journey to leading the Piedmont Park Conservancy began with a graduate education that stressed the multi-faceted nature of environmental and natural resources issues and guided students in engaging diverse stakeholders in conversations. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Master’s in Environmental Studies program at my alma mater, Ohio University, helped nurture in me an approach to broad-based engagement that brings environmental science, public policy, and community advocacy together to drive consensus and action. It’s a model needed today more than ever in our civic life.?I’m the environmental professional I am today due, in large part, to the education and experience that Ohio University’s Master of Science in Environmental Studies program provided me.?Happy 50th birthday OU-MSES!?To the next 50 (and beyond)!
