Why Public Media Matters—And Why I’m Fighting for It Like so many of us, I grew up with Sesame Street, learning life lessons from Big Bird and Elmo. Reading Rainbow sparked my love of books. The Magic School Bus made science an adventure. These weren’t just shows—they were doorways to learning, made possible by public media. That’s why I was relieved to see Congress approve continued funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. It’s a step in the right direction—but we can’t take it for granted. https://lnkd.in/gzqjVB3Z Public media is more than nostalgia. It’s a lifeline—providing trusted journalism, educational programming, and diverse storytelling that might not otherwise have a platform. It ensures that everyone, regardless of income, has access to high-quality content that informs and inspires. This is personal—not just because of what public media meant in my own life, but because I’m leading the impact campaign for PBS’s American Coup, a powerful new documentary on the Wilmington massacre of 1898—the only successful coup in U.S. history. ?? The 2025 UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report (UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies) is out, and the numbers tell a familiar story: audience demand for diverse content remains strong, but industry leadership continues to lag behind. ?? Films where 41-50% of the cast were people of color—including Wicked, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and A Quiet Place: Day One—generated the highest median global box office earnings. ?? BIPOC moviegoers made up the majority of ticket buyers for top theatrical films, particularly those with diverse casts. ?? Despite these trends, BIPOC representation in lead roles dropped to 25.2%—a decline from 2023. Directors, writers, and total cast diversity also saw setbacks. The numbers reinforce a long-standing pattern: films that reflect diverse audiences tend to perform better, yet those making greenlighting decisions have not meaningfully adjusted. This disconnect represents a missed financial opportunity and suggests that systemic barriers remain deeply entrenched at the decision-making level. At Picture Motion, we work at the intersection of film and impact, and these findings underscore a critical challenge for the industry: understanding that diversity isn’t just an ethical imperative—it’s a market-driven necessity. If audience demand is clear and the financial upside is proven, what structural obstacles are preventing sustained progress? The data is there. The business case is strong. The question now is how—and when—the industry will respond. It’s a time to honor our past, uplift the present, and shape the future. And today, I want to use my birthday as a personal call to action: Let’s commit to supporting Black stories, Black culture, and Black communities—not just in February, but every single day. At Picture Motion, we know that Black history is American history. Black culture is the heartbeat of social change. Black stories have shaped the world and continue to do so.
