NEWS: X-62 VISTA Team Finalist For 2023 Collier Trophy! The X-62A Air Combat Evolution (ACE) Team, a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) led collaboration with the #USAF Test Pilot School, Air Force Research Laboratory and academic and industry partners, has been named one of four finalists for the National Aeronautic Association #CollierTrophy. The Collier Trophy is awarded annually for “the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America with respect to improving the performance, efficiency, and safety of air or space vehicles, the value of which has been thoroughly demonstrated by actual use during the preceding year.” ACE was nominated following the program’s demonstration of the first #AI vs human within-visual-range engagement, or dogfight, conducted with actual F-16 aircraft. In flight, the ACE AI-algorithms controlled a specially modified F-16 test aircraft known as the X-62A, or VISTA (Variable In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft), at the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California. #DARPA industry partners on ACE are Calspan Corporation, Lockheed Martin, EpiSci, PhysicsAI and Shield AI. Academic partners are the John Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).
