At the Physical Activity Alliance (PAA), our mission is to create, support, and advocate policy and system changes that enable all Americans to enjoy physically active lives. In pursuit of this mission, PAA coordinates broadly with industry leaders to: - Identify, evaluate, and promote promising evidence-based policies that promote physical activity - Provide strategies for health care, recreation, transportation, and other sectors of the economy to enhance physical activity opportunities - Lead professional development opportunities to education professionals, students, and civic leaders in public health, education, and beyond. Together, we can build a healthy nation where the opportunity for physical activity is easily available in the daily lives of all Americans. #MoveWithUs

Today is National Rural Health Day. One way we could support our rural communities is by providing funding opportunities for sidewalks, streetlights, parks, and other aspects of a connected built environment that make it easier to be active. For more information about physical activity in rural areas, I recommend this great study: https://lnkd.in/eSSGpY3F). Physical Activity Alliance #ActivePeople

On September 19th, 100+ physical activity advocates representing over 75+ organizations came together for the 2nd Annual Physical Activity Alliance Symposium. A gathering of individuals doing the hard work needed to make physical activity more accessible and part of the day-to-day lives and health of all people in the United States. Move to Live?More is proud to be part of this coalition speaking with one voice to bring about the necessary systems and policy changes to get people moving. On a personal note, when I became a fitness instructor 28 years ago, I never envisioned that I would lead a stretch break for an audience which includes the people at U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who oversee national efforts to increase physical activity. #movetolivemore #movewithus

Get Ready For A Week Without Driving: September 30 - October 6, 2024! Today marks the first day of the National Week Without Driving. The week challenges drivers to forego driving for one week, encouraging awareness and understanding of the mobility challenges of nearly a third of Americans who cannot drive. For a week, participants navigate their daily lives using transit, walking, biking and other modes of transportation. They gain firsthand insight into the transportation options available, or lack of, in their communities. WWD raises awareness and serves as a catalyst for broader discussions and research on transportation accessibility and equity. The #WeekWithoutDriving challenge was launched in 2021 by Anna Zivarts at Disability Rights Washington. After two successful years, their partnership with?America Walks?took the Week Without Driving national. More than 142 organizations across 41 states and the District of Columbia joined the challenge in 2023 and this year the 2024 challenge will be even bigger! Last week's Physical Activity Alliance 2nd Annual Symposium was a gathering of over 100 of the top thought leaders in the physical activity space. Please read my blog below for the highlights and key takeaways from the event!
2nd Annual Physical Activity Alliance Symposium – Key Takeaways Read this week's blog here: https://lnkd.in/gN6wPPzc I recently had the privilege of attending the 2nd Annual Physical Activity Alliance (PAA) Symposium, a gathering of over one hundred thought leaders from healthcare, education, public health, fitness, and policy-making sectors. The event focused on improving physical activity in the U.S. through collaboration and innovation. I have recapped the event in my most recent blog. Here are a few highlights: Opening Remarks Pam Watts, Board President of PAA, emphasized the need for cross-sector collaboration to drive systemic change in promoting physical activity. Panel Discussions Changing the Systems: Experts discussed transforming education, healthcare, public health, and exercise professions to better support physical activity. Pressing Issues: Topics included the role of anti-obesity medications, the connection between physical activity and mental health, military readiness, and addressing disparities in physical activity access. Leveraging Major Currents Toward 2028: Discussions centered on upcoming initiatives, including updates to Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and the National Physical Activity Plan. Transforming the Culture: Panelists explored barriers to physical activity, including accessibility issues and community design. Finding Policy Opportunities: The final panel focused on leveraging policy to promote physical activity through legislative advocacy and partnerships. Key Innovations Introduction of the "It's Time to Move" app, designed to integrate physical activity data into electronic medical records. Presentation of Tivity Health's research on consumer behavior in health and wellness. The symposium highlighted the importance of uniting diverse sectors to promote physical activity. It emphasized not only the challenges we face but also the tremendous opportunities ahead as we work toward creating a healthier, more active nation. One area for future exploration is bridging the gap between policy/public health leaders and the facility, supplier, and financial community instrumental in implementing these initiatives. As we move forward, continued collaboration, innovative solutions, and strategic advocacy will be crucial in creating a brighter, more active future for all. #PhysicalActivity #PublicHealth #Wellness #HealthyLiving #PAA2024
