On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, Mulham Khoder from imec had the opportunity to introduce the photonixFab project to the participants of the 13th Europractice Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) training at imec. During his presentation, Mulham highlighted the ambitious goals of #photonixFab in advancing the manufacturing capacity for SOI (Silicon-on-Insulator) and SiN (Silicon Nitride) #PICs in Europe. He also emphasized the critical role of heterogeneous integration of Indium Phosphide (InP) and Lithium Niobate (LNO) on both SOI and SiN platforms, which will enable new advances in photonic technologies. ?? The objective of this EU-funded project is to establish a European photonics device value chain and initial industrial manufacturing capabilities, providing a path to scalable high-volume manufacturing for innovative product developers. The photonixFAB consortium is made up of major public and private enterprises, plus highly respected research institutes – all focusing on the development and production of next-generation silicon photonics. photonixFAB is co-funded by the European Union under grant agreement no. 101111896. The project is supported by the Key Digital Technologies Joint Undertaking and its members including top-up funding by Belgium, Germany, France, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

We are proud to launch the new PHIX RF Characterization Package at #PhotonicsWest! This open architecture PIC packaging solution supports 16 RF signals in a GSG configuration, alongside its 120 DC connections. The launch is accompanied by a design rule document that can be downloaded for free from the link below! Based on off-the-shelf building blocks and standardized production processes, this packaging solution enables quick and affordable characterization of your first PICs (SiPh, SiN, TFLN/BTO, InP, or other platforms) in RF optoelectronic modules. By fanning out the RF signal in two stages, this solution combines great flexibility with a high level of standardization. The first stage is an RF fanout board that is selectable based on the desired bond pad density and RF performance. The second stage consists of two standardized RF connector boards for distribution to multi-coax breakout cables. This prototype packaging solution enables rapid and cost-effective design iterations to accelerate your PIC based innovation towards success.
