A team comprising scientists from University of California, San Francisco, University of California, Santa Cruz, and University of California, Berkeley collaborated on an optogenetics-based approach to controlling abnormal neural activity in humans. Their findings could someday provide an alternative to surgery for patients who have seizures that cannot be managed with medication: #Photonics #Optics

关于我们
Since 1954, Photonics Media has been the world’s leading resource for the photonics industry. Publisher of Photonics Spectra, BioPhotonics, Vision Spectra, and the Photonics Buyers’ Guide, our audience of academics, researchers, manufacturers, and end users is the largest verified audience in the photonics industry. We also maintain a thriving web presence with 2.8 million page views annually on our photonics.com website. A staff of about 50 employees currently works at the company’s headquarters, Laurin Publishing Co., in Pittsfield, Mass., and its branch offices. The company also includes several contributing editors located around the world and an editorial advisory board of leaders in the photonics industry. Over the past six decades, Photonics Media has fostered a tradition of innovation that has defined the industry. As its publications grow — following photonics technology into an ever-widening range of applications — the company adheres to a philosophy of editorial quality and integrity, maintaining an international reputation for leadership in photonics. Through the years, the company’s mission as laid out by founder Teddi C. Laurin has remained unchanged: “to actively encourage progress and not simply reflect it, for all of us in the photonics industry can best achieve success by sharing our knowledge, our insights, and our visions for the future.”

A theory posited by University of Birmingham researchers explores the nature of photons, showing how they are emitted by atoms or molecules and shaped by their environment. The theory explains how light and matter interact at the quantum level and allows researchers to define the precise shape of a single photon. The nature of this interaction leads to infinite possibilities for light to exist and propagate through its surrounding environment: #Photonics #Quantum

Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS, in collaboration with HOLOEYE Photonics AG, have developed a compact liquid crystal-on-silicon (LCOS) microdisplay with high refresh rates that enables improved optical modulation. LCOS microdisplays are characterized by low power consumption, small size, and lightweight design. They are used in switchable adaptive optics, particularly as phase modulators, and as projection displays in AR and VR: #Photonics #Displays

As the demand for data storage grows, better ways are required to encode large amounts of data for rapid transmission. One method of transmitting data is to encode it in laser light and send it through optical fibers. A new design method from Aalto University creates light vortices with quasicrystals to transmit data in fiber optic telecommunications: #Photonics #Lasers

Researchers at the University of Ottawa have demonstrated that a laser beam can act like an opaque object and cast a visible shadow under certain conditions. The finding challenges the traditional understanding of shadows and opens possibilities for technologies that could use a laser beam to control another laser beam. The team's experimental setup involved shining a green laser beam through a ruby crystal while illuminating it from the side with blue light. This arrangement created a shadow on a surface, visible to the naked eye: #Photonics #Lasers
Study Finds Laser Light Can Cast a Shadow
