Packaging photonic chips is hard, and it is even harder if you combine photonics with hundreds of MEMS devices and they all need to be connected to electrical drivers. Arun Kumar Mallik, PhD of Tyndall National Institute is at #IPC2024 to show the packaging strategies of the MORPHIC and PHORMIC projects to use high-density ceramic interposers to package these devices.
关于我们
The PHORMIC project is a Horizon-European funded project that develops the next-generation wafer-scale silicon photonics platform, enhanced with low-power MEMS actuators and transfer-printed III-V laser diodes. Combining this photonic chip technology with advanced packaging methodologies and driver electronics, we want to create a versatile platform for programmable photonic integrated circuits. We will demonstrate the capabilities of our platform in different application domains, including datacenter communications, optical sensing, and microwave photonics.

Wim Bogaerts , professor in the Photonics Research Group (Ghent University - imec), gave an extensive 1-hour tutorial on programmable photonic circuits at the IEEE Photonics Society conference IPC. Starting from the need in the photonic ecosystem for rapid prototyping capabilities, he dived into the different circuit architectures, the need for better electro-optic phase shifters (such as the MEMS devices of PHORMIC ), and the electronic and software layers needed to make everything work. The final question is: what can you use these circuits for?

Exciting meeting. Exchanging the latest progress in building our next-gen photonic chip platform. And we thank VLC Photonics (Hitachi Group) for the great hospitality (and sunny weather).
We are happy to welcome the members of the European project PHORMIC to our beautiful city Valencia for this General Meeting!??? Phormic is pioneering the development of next-generation programmable photonic chips, providing a low adoption threshold for developers across diverse applications.? ? By combining high-speed silicon photonics with cutting-edge programmability, this project aims to revolutionize industries like data center communication, sensing, and mm-wave wireless beamforming and we will serve as the key #testing partner, conducting experimental measurements of active devices on the Silicon Photonic MEMS platform at the wafer level, and supporting with advanced capabilities in fully automated testing methods. ? Looking forward to the exciting discussions and future milestones! ?? #PHORMIC

Kristinn B. Gylfason of KTH Royal Institute of Technology shows the strengths of silicon photonic MEMS of the MORPHIC and PHORMIC projects at the ePIXfab - the European Silicon Photonics Alliance heterogeneous integration workshop. The low power consumption and compact footprint makes this a uniquely capable platform.

PHORMIC is proudly co-organizing the workshop on Heterogeneous integration with ePIXfab - the European Silicon Photonics Alliance, to held today and tomorrow in Palaiseau near Paris. Our work is as heterogeneous as it gets, combining MEMS and III-V light sources on silicon photonics. Our work will be presented by Kristinn B. Gylfason and Gunther Roelkens.
