Back at the Chester County Department of Mental Health today for our workshop on Trauma-Informed Care designed for frontline workers, peer support specialists, and behavioral health techs. Many agencies focus on providing trauma informed care training for their clinical staff, but might overlook the importance of trauma informed care training for the rest of their front line staff who are likely to have more interactions with patients on a daily basis. Today we explored the foundations of trauma, different types of trauma, the connection between trauma and other mental health issues, and the basics of trauma informed care. there were a few themes that emerged such as: -reconsidering difficult client behaviors as possible trauma responses -examine communication styles (verbal and non verbal aspects) and their impact on clients -boundary setting in trauma recovery -transference and retraumatization -how to respond to clients sharing about trauma -managing anger with clients -growth from trauma Thank you to everyone who joined us and to Chester County for the ongoing collaboration! We are proud to offer ongoing free trainings through a contract with Chester County Department of Human Services. Today’s workshops included a morning session focused on trauma informed organizations and the surgeon general‘s guidance for healthy workplaces. The afternoon session was an introduction to Psychodrama and experiential group facilitation. These workshops are offered as part of an ongoing multi year contract with Phoenix Center for Experiential Trauma Therapy and the county to make high quality training and CEs available for free to any professional who serves residents in the county. Next Friday, we are offering a free 4 hour afternoon session on trauma informed care and post traumatic growth designed for Frontline workers, peer support specialists, and behavioral health techs.

Free Trauma-Informed Care Training for Front-Line Staff Friday March 21st, 12pm-4pm in West Chester Hi Everyone, it is a bit last minute but Chester County just opened up registration to outside attendees for a FREE 4 hour training on trauma-informed care and posttraumatic growth for peer support specialists and behavioral health techs. It is designed for folks in direct service roles but open to anyone and includes CE hours for social work, counselors, MFTs, and psychologists. In celebration of social work month, I was invited to present grand rounds at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children on growing from vicarious, trauma and burnout through trauma informed care. One of the big misconceptions about trauma informed care is that it is only for therapists. The reality is that trauma informed care principles are designed also for organizations and systems across any industry. Trauma informed care is particularly relevant for any healthcare or hospital system where patients are experiencing trauma by the nature of receiving services there for life-threatening medical conditions. Staff in healthcare agencies are experiencing significant levels of vicarious trauma and burnout, which makes trauma informed care even more important. As time goes on, trauma informed care is becoming more and more of a necessity, not only for clinical or ethical reasons, but also required by licensing boards and grant funders.
