Last month Scarlett Spring, Exec. Dir. of the PBC moderated a panel as a part of the ULI Arizona 20th?Annual Trends Day. The panel titled, Clean, Wet, or Dry: The What and Why of Lab Space include esteemed members of the bioscience community including Steven Lester MD, a 39-year cardiologist, founder and Chief Medical Officer of the Mayo Clinic/ ASU MedTech Accelerator, John Grady, Senior VP, Northeast Region Executive at Wexford Science & Technology, LLC, and Adam Denmark, VP, Science & Technology Design Strategist, and Director of Lab Planning at SmithGroup. The conversation covers the distinction between types of labs, customizations for research including equipment, types of instruments, and necessary requirements, safety measures and safety equipment. Also discussed is the booming semiconductor industry coming to Arizona and how it differentness from the medical device space and the differences in market demand. HonorHealth Research Institute announced the opening of its new $7 million Center for Translational Science laboratory in the heart of the Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC) at the 850PBC building. "This laboratory, which includes lab bays, a tissue culture room and faculty office space, is the first significant physical footprint of the Center for Translational Science, whose goal is to take scientific breakthroughs at the HonorHealth Research Institute and translate them into new devices, drugs and preventative measures that will improve the lives of patients." “We are excited to welcome HonorHealth Research Institute to?850 PBC?and be able to support the partnership between HonorHealth and ASU. University research drives innovation. Arizona State University and the University of Arizona were named to the National Academy of Inventors Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted Utility Patents in 2024. For the fourth time, ASU ranked in the top 10 universities worldwide. In 2024, ASU secured 180 patents, ranking No. 9 among universities worldwide and No. 7 among U.S. universities. In 2024, U of A climbed 20 spots up the rankings to No. 31 worldwide. The impressive rise was due to a 57% increase in patents received by Wildcat researchers. Patents are a vital step in bringing university research to our communities. Patents from our universities are being used in health care, communications, water management, national defense and more.
