  • The Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University invites applications for the position of Nancy Schaenen Endowed Visiting Scholar of Ethics to begin in August 2024. This is a two-year term position with an option to extend for a third year by mutual agreement. The Schaenen Scholar position has the following main responsibilities. First, to teach 3 courses per year in the appropriate academic department. Second, to share their research expertise to engage intellectually with the DePauw community. This could include public lectures, arranging symposia, hosting visiting scholars, leading faculty reading groups, serving as a guest lecturer in a class, and so on. Third, to assist with the educational and academic aspects of our student internship programs, by providing training and mentorship to student interns. Fourth, to help manage various aspects of the Institute’s programming, including reviewing paper submissions, course proposals, and funding proposals. We seek a scholar with a strong background and record of accomplishment and/or promise in ethics. A Ph.D. (by the time of appointment) is required. A Ph.D. in Philosophy is preferred, although we will consider candidates from other fields. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in ethical analysis and argument applied to issues of practical, professional, personal, and social concern and should have the desire and ability to engage non-specialists at all levels. A commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts setting and evidence of effective and inclusive teaching are essential. The Prindle Institute specifically seeks candidates with an ability to teach in areas of applied ethics (e.g., bioethics, business ethics, technology ethics) and/or candidates with an ability to teach in the broad area of PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics).   • SAVE THE DATE: One-Day Workshop on Nozick's _Anarchy, State, and Utopia_. The Kellogg Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, Virginia Tech August 8, 2024 https://lnkd.in/eS2ZGABm The Kellogg Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics will host a one-day workshop on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Robert Nozick’s Anarchy, State, and Utopia. The workshop will take place on August 8, 2024, in the Goodall Room of the Newman Library at Virginia Tech. Since its publication, Anarchy, State, and Utopia has become a classic of political philosophy. The book is full of innovative ideas and intriguing thought experiments that have had an immense influence on the discipline as well as related fields. Many discussions of the book draw on methods and themes in philosophy, politics, and economics. The workshop offers a forum for scholars to present some of their most recent, related work. Each speaker will provide a presentation of their work. The sessions will allow plenty of time for discussion and interaction with the speakers and PPE faculty.   • NEW JOB POSTING: University of Pennsylvania (PPE Program) Position: Postdoctoral Fellow Deadline: Rolling The Philosophy, Politics and Economics Program at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for the position of a Postdoctoral Fellow, beginning Fall 2024 (appointment start date July 1, 2024). This position is designed to support a talented behavioral political science/public policy scholar. Specific duties will include teaching each semester one advanced interdisciplinary seminar of their choice, and each year one research seminar to train a small number of students to conduct research in their field. The appointment will be for an initial year with the possibility of annual renewal for up to an additional four years, contingent upon satisfactory performance review and approval by the Dean. Knowledge of experimental methods is important. In particular, experience in conducting field, lab-based and web-based experiments is desirable. A successful candidate must demonstrate outstanding capacity to produce original research.
