关于我们

The ANU Philippines Institute aims to maintain and promote the role of The Australian National University as the world’s premier institution in the conduct of research, the practice of teaching, and a broad range of outreach activities on Asia and the Pacific region. The Philippines Institute, together with other regional institutes at the ANU, serves as a hub for comprehensive expertise advice to policymakers and practitioners in the Philippines and Australia. It plays a critical role in bridging research and policy knowledge on Southeast Asia through a rich understanding of Philippine politics, economics and socio-cultural dynamics. The Institute also recognises the distinctive significance, context and history of the Philippines as a gateway to wider connections in the Pacific region, and in forging linkages that bring Asia together with the Pacific.

?? Have you already registered for our upcoming seminar? On Wednesday,?2 April 2025 Dr Sue Thompson will discuss the history of the Sabah dispute between the Philippines and Malaysia by exploring its narratives, historical contexts, and broader implications. ??? Wednesday, 2 April 2025 ?? 4.00-5.00pm (Canberra) or 1.00-2.00pm (Manila) ?? Regional Institutes Boardroom at The Australian National University or online via zoom ???Register: https://lnkd.in/gfKUy_sP Read more about the seminar: The Sabah dispute between the Philippines and Malaysia originated from historical claims by the Philippines over territory that was previously a British crown colony and then became part of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. The Philippines bases its claim on inheritance from the Sultan of Sulu, questioning whether an 1878 agreement "ceded" or "leased" the territory. The claim was temporarily set aside during the negotiations to form ASEAN but diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the Philippines were suspended in 1968 over a Philippine law claiming Sabah.?The dispute was resolved bilaterally in 1969 and while ASEAN maintained a non-interference approach, the dispute threatened to derail the association in its early years and has not been completely resolved.

  • Following the International Criminal Court’s arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila on March 11, global discussions on his administration’s human rights record have resurfaced. In her policy brief published last October, former ANU Philippines Institute Fellow Dr. Nina Araneta-Alana, PhD, explores the human rights challenges of the Duterte era. Her analysis not only sheds light on the complexities of the human rights landscape under the Duterte administration but also highlights the opportunities for justice and reform in light of continuous engagement with international human rights bodies and mechanisms.
