关于我们
Since its founding in 1954 as the region’s first music organization, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County has been renowned for bringing the world’s best and most sought-after classical musicians to Orange County’s stages. A beloved and well-supported community institution, the Philharmonic Society’s mission is to foster an appreciation for music by presenting national and international performances of the highest quality while also providing dynamic and innovative music education programs for individuals of all ages. Over the last 60+ years, the Philharmonic Society has presented all but two of Gramophone magazine’s top twenty ranked orchestras of the world, and each season features the healthiest roster of touring orchestras and artists on the West Coast. Artists presented include Riccardo Muti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman, among others. The Philharmonic Society's extensive series of Youth Music Education Programs reach more than 100,000 students from elementary through high school each year, and are offered free of charge to schools, students, and parents. These programs introduce youth to the joy of music and inspire them to play an instrument, expand their imaginations, connect to classroom curriculum, and stimulate learning at all levels, and have enabled millions of children to encounter classical music—many for the first time. Our youth programs are made possible by the tireless volunteerism and fundraising of The Committees of the Philharmonic Society who provide more than 90,000 hours of philanthropic service each year. Founded in 1970 as the area’s first honors youth orchestra, the Philharmonic Society’s Orange County Youth Symphony, now under the artistic direction of conductor Johannes Müller Stosch, continues to be recognized as Southern California’s powerhouse for the region’s finest youth symphony program.

Please give a warm welcome to Hana Kurihara, our new Production Coordinator! Hana is a long-time admirer of the performing arts, despite rarely being in the spotlight herself. Beginning as a production assistant at the Soka Performing Arts Center during her time as an undergraduate student at Soka University of America, Hana quickly discovered a passion for supporting the accomplishments of those onstage from her place behind the figurative (and sometimes literal) curtain. After securing her Bachelors in Liberal Arts, she continued at the Performing Arts Center as the Stage Manager, then Rental & Events / Stage Manager, and finally Production Manager. She then moved to the university's Strategic Marketing & Communications department, where she led initiatives to build organizational workflows and manage inaugural community-wide events. As Production Coordinator, she is excited to contribute her production and community engagement experience to the Philharmonic Society's concerts and Orange County Youth Symphony & String Ensemble. She looks forward to supporting an institution passionate about music and outreach.

Meet Zach Edwards, our new Development Coordinator! Zach has been passionately involved in the performing arts from a young age, and more seriously since graduating from high school. He has several years of dance experience and holds a BA in Arts Management from the University of Massachusetts, as well as an Arts Management certificate from UC Irvine. His work started as the Assistant to the Artistic Director of the Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts, and his role quickly transformed to that of Outreach Coordinator. He began touring with Kids Artistic Revue in 2019 as their Lead Stage Manager, which provided valuable event and staff management experience. In 2021, he became Coordinator for the ABT Gillespie School at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, which solidified his interest in working in the arts. Zach is excited to be a part of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County’s Development Team and looks forward to diving in headfirst!

On May 23, the Philharmonic Society's 70th Anniversary gala, held at Samueli Theater, raised $346,450 to benefit the Philharmonic Society and its Strike Up the Band grant program, which creates meaningful impact on music programs in schools across Orange County through the granting of musical instruments, teaching materials, supplies, and more. Our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported the event by attending, bidding, and donating!

Earlier this month the Philharmonic Society honored world-renowned violinist Joshua Bell and founder of the Orange County Youth Symphony, John Koshak, with the 2024 Golden Baton Award! Joshua Bell, who has performed as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, conductor and Music Director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, has appeared with the Philharmonic Society in nearly all of these roles. We have presented him a total of eleven times, including as one of our featured artists at our 60th anniversary celebration. John Koshak founded the Orange County Youth Symphony in 1970, and served as its Music Director for 37 years. Under John’s leadership, the orchestra performed more than 1,000 rehearsals and workshops, 111 concerts for the public and more than 300 concerts for Orange County schoolchildren. Join us in thanking these two incredible people for their contributions to the cultural life of Orange County!
