Severe storms this month wrought devastation and tragic loss to Missouri. Individuals, communities, and grantmaking organizations are (very appropriately) in the Response & Relief phase of the "disaster life cycle." Thank you to all donating to meet those immediate needs! And, as we advance beyond this reactive moment, philanthropy can invest strategically to support a more resilient and ready Missouri. This was the focus of the breakout session led by Cari (Logan) Cullen from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy during our January conference. Some take-aways from Cari's session include: ? Support our current disaster phase (response/relief) -- and continue beyond it. Consider how you can also invest in recovery, preparedness, mitigation, and resilience. ? Provide flexible funding.?Your flexibility allows partners to use resources as needed over an extended period and helps build trust with local organizations to strengthen partnership over time. ? Prioritize local investment. Local leaders and organizations play a vital role in providing immediate relief and advancing long-term equitable recovery in communities after a disaster. ? Address root causes of vulnerability. Invest in areas that will improve people’s lives and reduce their social vulnerability to disaster, such as increasing access to safe, affordable housing.

As today’s op-ed in the The St. Louis American shares, JSMF is partnering with Edward Jones to fund a “baby bonds” program managed by Mobility Capital Finance, Inc. (MoCaFi). The pilot program will seed $5,000 in an investment account on behalf of 300 income-eligible seventh graders in St. Louis. During this week when America celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we find his work and memory especially poignant. In the spirit of Dr. King’s message of cooperation and collective care for our communities, we are excited to launch a collaboration that will help tackle one of the greatest challenges of our time: generational poverty. We invite you to take a moment to read this op-ed, co-authored by JSMF President Dr. Jason Q. Purnell, MoCaFi Founder & CEO Wole Coaxum, and Edward Jones Director of Community Relations David Stiffler. Baby bonds have the potential to make a substantial positive impact on the futures of young St. Louisans. We hope that existing programs and the pilot we are launching in St. Louis will inspire government, philanthropy, and the private sector to collaborate and adopt the baby bond approach as a national model for investing in America’s youth. #stlouis #babybonds #economicjustice

As we navigate sharp winter weather and our neighbors in California begin the process of recovery from historic fires, it is timely to consider how philanthropy can support more equitable disaster prevention, preparedness, emergent recovery, and long-term recovery. We are grateful that Center for Disaster Philanthropy will lead a breakout session on this important topic at our Show-Me Philanthropy Statewide Conference & Annual Meeting in January 30-31. Their session will explore the role of funders in all phases of disaster with examples of Missouri disaster response with the intention of readying Missouri funders to support our communities in equitable recovery after disaster. Learn more about Conference at https://lnkd.in/dGBgJKaD. Note: registration is sold out, but PhilMO Members or non-Member Missouri funders may request to join the waitlist by contacting info (at) PhilMO.org.
