We love to invite Innovation Academy Alumni to share their experiences with the current cohort. Today we welcomed Kadidja Nanakasse, Andrew Viren, Katie Englander, and Philip Asabere to reflect on how they’ve used innovation tools and principles in their work since participating in the program. Andrew Buss led an insightful discussion about the challenges and opportunities of innovation tools. The group discussed the importance of tapping into the innovation network made up of almost 200 alumn, asking for insight from users; and piloting new solutions. You’d be surprised how often solutions are simple and “low-tech” while improving service delivery, and it’s because you’re prioritizing people. We call our alumni “all stars” ?? because they really appreciate and implement these design thinking tools in their day to day work. Thank you all for participating today and being advocates for this program! We love building the network and cultivating a community of thoughtful, cool, and creative City workers!

It was great to hear from previous Oxholm Fellows and learn about their experiences working in the City of Philadelphia - Law Department . I’m excited to see the incredible work future fellows will also accomplish. A special thank you to Toby Oxholm for your continued contributions to public interest work, and to the keynote speaker, Keir Bradford-Grey, for sharing your valuable insights. ?Deputy City Solicitor- Civil Rights Unit at the Philadelphia Law Department ?Director- Marshall Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project at Drexel University’s Thomas R. Kline School of Law

?Last week, I had the honor of being installed as President of the National Bar Association, Women Lawyers Division, Philadelphia Chapter, along with the swearing-in of our phenomenal new Board! I am so blessed to be part of such an esteemed organization and incredibly excited to lead as we continue to push forward NBA WLD’s important mission of advancing and empowering Black women in law. Today, I am particularly excited as we launched two new initiatives — the MentorHER and Student Liaison Program. These initiatives are deeply meaningful to me because mentorship has played a major role in how far I have come in this profession. MentorHer will create life-changing connections between all Black women attorneys and aspiring young Black women attorneys, while the Student Liaison Program will ensure that Black law students have the guidance and support they need to thrive. These programs are critical to WLD’s goals of fostering leadership, growth, and opportunity within our community. I encourage all of our members and future members to join in this initiative to strengthen our bonds throughout this legal community. Links below! I want to express my deep gratitude to the past presidents of WLD. Their vision and dedication have set the stage for all the successes we celebrate today, and I am thankful for the legacy they’ve built and look forward to the continued support and guidance from Immediate Past President Darelee M. Hamilton, Esq. in addition to working alongside our President-Elect Lanique Roberts, who will bring great insight, is a collaborative leader and committed to all what WLD stands for. I am beyond elated to work with our new board! Each member brings unique strengths and talents to our mission of serving the community and uplifting the next generation of Black women in law. I am blessed to work with such a strong group of women. Together, I know we will make this year one of growth, empowerment, and success. I look forward to a successful year ahead, serving our legal community and continuing to empower Black women legal professionals.? Let’s get to work! ?? #MentorHer #WLDPhilly #WomenInLaw #Leadership #BlackWomenInLaw #Empowerment #Community #theynotlikeus #blackwomanlawyers https://lnkd.in/eaSBgBqM https://lnkd.in/eN2B3NK8

Drexel University's Thomas R. Kline School of Law kicked off October with a visit from the City of Philadelphia - Law Department. Students were excited to meet Tianna Kalogerakis and Kadidja Nanakasse as part of the Career Strategies Office LAWYERS IN THE LOBBY (LIL) program. Tianna and Kadidja provided students with great information about the important work of the Law Department. And took the time to answer lots and lots of questions about internships, the Philly legal community and what it's like to work in public service.

  • We love hearing about the experiences of our interns - thanks for sharing Maya Muller! Many of our interns enjoy their time with the Law Department so much that they choose to come back to intern again or join our full time staff. #FunFact: one of our longest term attorneys, Valerie Robinson, Chair of the Corporate & Tax Group, has been with the department for over 35 years after starting her career here as an intern while she was in law school. Honors Psychology Student at Drexel University

As I settle into my junior year this fall, I want to take a moment to reflect on my summer as an intern with the City of Philadelphia - Law Department. I had the privilege of working in the Labor and Employment unit, where I gained valuable insights into the intersection between workers' rights and the legal system. I extend my gratitude to my supervisors, Jill Osborn and Lisa Swiatek, for their guidance throughout this enriching experience. I am also excited to share that I have transitioned to interning with the Child Welfare Unit (CSU). This opportunity allows me to learn about family court and the juvenile justice system, two crucial aspects of the legal system. I would like to share my appreciation for my current supervisor within CSU, Meagan Mirtenbaum who is teaching me the ropes of this complex unit. I am excited to continue building connections across different units and deepening my understanding of the law within the City of Philadelphia. I am beyond appreciative of this continued opportunity, for all those who helped along the way, and for the knowledge that I will carry with me on my future endeavors!

The Law Department proudly represented the City of Philadelphia at the IMLA - International Municipal Lawyers Association Conference this week in Orlando, Florida. In our presentation titled, “Moving the Needle Towards Becoming an Anti-Racist Organization in the Child Welfare System: How Municipal Lawyers Can Adopt Anti-Racist Principles to their Practice”, we highlighted our collaborative work with our City client, the Philadelphia Department of Human Services (DHS), to examine and address racial disparities among the children and families involved in the local child welfare system. This presentation also shared action steps for mitigating the disproportionate and generational impact of the child welfare system on Black and brown communities, from child protective services investigations to foster care placements. Below is a video included in our presentation, which features DHS Commissioner Kimberly Ali, briefly describing how the department got started on this journey and lessons learned along the way. Thank you to Jessica E. Rodriguez, Esq., Meghan Goddard, Kathleen Kim, and Nicolette Burgess-Bolden for their ongoing dedication to embedding anti-racism in the work of the Law Department's Child Welfare Unit and for their efforts to share this practice with other municipal lawyers! #municipallaywers #childwelfare
