As DesignPhiladelphia wraps up two weeks of incredible events during its 20th year it feels appropriate to reflect on why it is such an important event to have. Life is made better by creativity, vision, and innovation; we would not be where we are without the efforts of creatives to spread and share our visions and dreams. DesignPhiladelphia serves as a celebration of creatives and grants us the privilege of sharing with one another our ideas and dreams and goals for the future of the design profession and creative world. The last two weeks were a wonderful frenzy of seeing new faces, making new connections, sharing new ideas, and witnessing what is possible when creative ventures are given their moments to shine. It was a delight to not just be a participant in the events of the last two weeks, but to also play a part in organizing it. It goes without saying that the people in DesignPhiladelphia , AIA Philadelphia, and my fellow members of Philadelphia Emerging Architects did a fantastic job in connecting creatives to one another through the multitude of events. Looking at the pictures from many of these events reminds me so much that our community is large, diverse, and beautiful with all of the individuals that elevate the community. So here's to 20 years, and to many more!! ??????

Last week, I had the honor of having my own poster showcased at DesignPhiladelphia's 20 Years Celebration KickOff Party! I attended the event alongside my fellow classmates Kate Farhat and Julia Rath. I would like to personally thank DesignPhiladelphia for the lovely night and Professor Renée Walker for introducing me to the event! This was my first experience at an art exhibit as a graphic design student, so I am really grateful to have had this opportunity. I made this poster to spread awareness for body image issues. Currently, ideas of the “perfect body” are consuming social media and leading to numerous mental health disorders among younger generations. I designed this poster to connect with people that also feel controlled and outcast by our society’s current body image stereotypes. Additionally, I wanted to connect my topic to the fashion industry to display its connection to issues around body dysmorphia. Therefore, I made a model walking down a runway of contradicting advice on whether she should eat more food or eat less. I chose all uppercase letters and made my background a bright to make the message bold. When I screen-printed, I kept the same idea by using neon pink and green. Below is a view of the pdf file of my original design as well as three examples of how I experimented through the screen printing of my design.
