Today, Phi Iota Alpha celebrates the Dominican Republic's Día de la Independencia, or independence day! Following the Spanish colonial era, the country endured 22 years of Haitian rule. This period saw the suppression of Dominican culture and identity. However, a clandestine movement emerged, which envisioned an independent Dominican nation. The secret society "La Trinitaria" played a crucial role in organizing the uprising and ultimately achieving independence. On February 27, 1844, after years of Haitian rule, a group of determined patriots, including Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, and Matías Ramón Mella, led a successful uprising against the Haitian forces. Today, Phi Iota Alpha highlights Francisca "Pancha" Carrasco, a Costa Rican heroine whose bravery echoes through history. Born in 1816, Pancha wasn't just a woman of her time; she defied expectations. When William Walker's filibusters threatened Costa Rica's sovereignty, Pancha did not hesitate. She fearlessly joined the fight, participating in the pivotal Second Battle of Rivas. Her courage and skill on the battlefield became legendary, inspiring her fellow countrymen and solidifying her place as a symbol of Costa Rican resistance. Pancha's legacy extends beyond the battlefield. While much of her personal life remains shrouded in history, her actions speak volumes. She challenged societal norms by taking up arms and defending her nation.
