Looking forward to a wide-ranging conversation with some of the leading thinkers in #systemsbiology and engineering about the importance of the #exposome. It is still the case today that even #multiomic research often overlooks the importance of the environmental and behavioral factors and fails to measure these key factors - which provide essential context for interpreting biological data. Join me for this roundtable webinar on June 11th along with our guest experts: Prof. Michael Snyder (Stanford University) Prof. Michèle Belot (Cornell University) Polina Segalova (Head of Product at Teal Health) Gary Smith (Senior Expert Systems Engineer at Airbus) Dr Sean Manion (Chief Scientific Officer at Equideum Health) It promises to be a lively discussion! UC Berkeley Interim Chief Innovation & Entrepreneurship Officer | Life Sciences Entrepreneurship Center | Berkeley Haas Faculty
#Pop_quiz, how many scientific instruments has superstar life sciences innovator Professor Lee Hood commercialized? ?? Well, it's a lot. Let me quote from Wikipedia: "The first gas phase protein sequencer (1982), for determining the sequence of amino acids in a given protein; a DNA synthesizer (1983), to synthesize short sections of DNA; a peptide synthesizer (1984), to combine amino acids into longer peptides and short proteins; the first automated DNA sequencer (1986), to identify the order of nucleotides in DNA; ink-jet oligonucleotide technology for synthesizing DNA and nanostring technology for analyzing single molecules of DNA and RNA." This was mainly before I graduated from high school. ?? Fast forward and after building institutes, receiving awards, inventing new things, etc., he's now a Distinguished Professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging on Aging, its Chief Innovation Officer, and founder/CEO of Phenome Health. ?? My Berkeley Changemaker: #Human_Health class was honored to meet Professor Hood today, and thrilled to hear his vision for "Radical Health". ?? One secret to his success? It's his understanding that making change in human health "requires long-term determined optimism to realize it." I'm not joking that "long-term determined optimism" has become my new mantra - gonna get that laminated. ?? Thank you, Professor Hood, for making time to inspire 75 Berkeley undergrads. #YouSeeBerkeley #lifesciences #entrepreneurship Life Sciences Entrepreneurship Center UC Berkeley Innovation & Entrepreneurship Laura Hassner, Rich Lyons, Roxanne Hernandez, Alex Budak, Seo Yeon Yoon
