Meet our student intern from California School for the Deaf-Riverside, interning with our #engineering department! His favorite part of the job is conducting in-house tests and enhancing his skills in programs like Solidworks. He believes that his time here has developed his skills and helped him become a better engineer. He even had help making plans for his future! ? Our student-intern has developed our skills too. One of his mentors, Omar, says "I find being able to teach and guide a student to be very rewarding. It allows me to be the type of mentor I wish I had when I was still a student. I also learned how tremendous of an impact being deaf affects an individual in the workplace." Meet Angel Sanchez, Jr., an advocate for disability inclusion, who’s working to reshape the workplace with kindness, respect, and opportunity for all. ?? Angel’s journey was deeply influenced by his Aunt, who had Down syndrome. Growing up with her in the family, he learned early on that people with disabilities bring unique perspectives, joy, and strength to any community. Years later, while working at a pizza delivery shop, Angel had the opportunity to work alongside a coworker with Down syndrome. She wasn’t just a colleague — she brought joy to the workplace, changed people’s attitudes for the better, and left a lasting impact on him. As the CEO of Phenix Technology, Inc., Angel was committed to helping people achieve their full potential while building a first class work culture. Remembering her joy and invaluable contributions she made to the team, he initiated a hiring strategy focused on creating opportunities for people with disabilities. His goal was simple: to ensure disabled individuals had the same opportunity to be hired and thrive. It began with a partnership with Exceed for an Adult Work Experience program. The individual we hired initially was shy, struggled with teamwork, didn't socialize, and felt like an outcast. Today, our Phenix Family Member has completed their GED, owns a vehicle, socializes confidently, smiles at work, and performs at an exceptional level! This partnership didn’t just change the life of the individual we hired — it transformed the culture of our workplace. Before we knew it, more than 30% of our workforce identified as #IDD or #Disabled.Then after, Angel initiated the Opportunity For All Program which focused on training IDD individuals. We’ve since expanded into #PhenixGateway, a nonprofit focused on the training, hiring, and advocacy of disabled individuals. Phenix Gateway aims to empower individuals with disabilities by providing access to?#career?opportunities,?#education, and hands-on?#experience. We do this in several ways; ?We provide an 11–week paid internship program that offers guidance and mentorship to neurodivergent individuals aspiring to join the workforce. Participants follow a thorough work-skills curriculum, which incorporates on-the-job training with community employer partners. ?We partner with local school districts, Inland Regional Center, and the California Department of Rehabilitation to provide vocational work-experience opportunities to those with disabilities. ?In conjunction with Riverside County Workforce Development - Employer Services, we partner with resource providers and businesses to provide?#accessible?Resource & Job Fairs to the community. ?In collaboration with State Council on Developmental Disabilities we also facilitate the conversation between businesses and resource providers to tackle the issues behind inclusive employment at our bi-monthly Inland Empire Disability Employment Awareness Roundtable.
