Proximo? Hi-C goes down under: Researchers in Australia tapped into the genetic diversity of the oat crown rust (a pathogenic fungus), with Phase Genomics’ proprietary Proximo Hi-C kits, purpose-built for fungal research. The team used Proximo to help construct 30 chromosome-level, fully phased nuclear haplotypes from USA and AU oat crown rust samples. Previous studies suggested that the Australian variety was purely clonal. Hi-C helped them pinpoint previously undetectable somatic hybridization and intercontinental movement of haplotypes. These new findings support the need for international molecular-level monitoring of oat rust pathogens. It’s a major step in constructing an oat crown rust pangenome and a key insight into the evolution of the fungal pest taking a bite out of our favorite cereal.
