February 28th is Rare Disease Day. Although individually uncommon, rare diseases are estimated to impact 25-30 million Americans. For these patients, innovation isn't just an exciting advancement—it's often the difference between having or not having treatment options. Behind every rare disease trial, there are researchers, sponsors, CROs, and sites working together to bring new treatments forward. But most importantly, there are patients and families who are counting on all of us to get it right. Today, we recognize them and stay committed to doing our part.

We're wrapping up our series with Dr. Jane Cooke Wright, a trailblazer in cancer research and treatment. Dr. Wright was one of the first researchers to use chemotherapy to treat cancer, first starting research in the late 1940s alongside her father, Dr. Louis Wright. As one of the highest-ranking Black women in medicine during her time, she was also a co-founder of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), shaping the future of cancer care.

On the last day of February, we'll be celebrating #RareDiseaseDay. Rare diseases are conditions that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the United States. There are more than 10,000 known rare diseases (impacting 1 in 10 Americans). Fewer than 5% of all rare diseases have an FDA-approved treatment. PharPoint has extensive experience supporting sponsors who are investigating treatment options for patients living with rare diseases. To learn more about how we can support your current or upcoming rare disease trial, reach out to our team.

Continuing our series on Black innovators in healthcare and research, this week's highlight is on Dr. Patricia Bath, an ophthalmologist, research scientist, and advocate for blindness prevention, treatment, and cure. As the first Black female doctor to receive a medical patent, Dr. Bath invented the Laserphaco Probe, a device that revolutionized cataract surgery and restored sight to individuals who were deemed blind prior to the invention. Dr. Bath's device is still used on a global scale to date.
