From Tokenism to Takeover: The Era of Women & Youth in Power I kicked off (March)Women’s History Month in Kigali, Rwanda, at Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC) 2025 a gathering of global health leaders tackling Africa’s biggest challenges. I was on a panel moderated by Bitania Lulu Berhanu where we spoke on a topic that hits home: "From Tokenism to Takeover: Youth Leadership & Economic Empowerment in Africa." Tokenism is simple, it’s being present but not empowered. Being seen but not heard. And if anyone knows what that feels like, it’s #women and #young people across the continent. But let’s be clear, we’re not asking for permission anymore. We’re taking over. Key Lessons from the Panel ?? ?? 1. Power isn’t given; it’s taken. For too long, women and youth have been "included" but not trusted with leadership. We are changing that not by waiting, but by building. ?? 2. Build networks, not just resumes. Success isn’t a solo journey. Those who make history do so by surrounding themselves with the right people, opportunities, and mindset. ?? 3. Speak the language of power. We’re not just “passionate”, we are strategic. To drive real change, we must present our ideas with clarity and strategy, showcasing our brilliance while making our seat at the table undeniable. ?? 4. Move from Representation to Reform. Being included isn’t enough. Women and youth must move from being guests in the room to decision makers shaping the rules. PHARMARUN, Chefaa, mum confessions, ProductDive and many other businesses and initiatives are proof that women-led, youth-led Innovation works ?? When we founded PHARMARUN, we weren’t waiting for permission to solve a problem, we built the solution. ?? We’re making medication accessible at scale. ?? We’re driving economic empowerment for local pharmacies. ?? We’re providing real world data that pushes for health policy shifts. And we are doing all this as a #female led, #youth led company. For the Next Generation, We Are Doing the Work and We won't let you down. I look at my daughter, son, nieces and nephews, and the generations after me, and I know one thing for sure, they will not have to struggle because of their gender. They will not be denied opportunities, not because they aren’t capable, but because of their age. We are breaking these barriers NOW. We are making sure their future is one where leadership isn’t a privilege but fairly earned. So, to every young leader, every woman, every changemaker: This is our time. Don’t wait to be chosen. Take up space. Speak up. Build. Innovate. Lead. The era of tokenism is over. It’s friggingggg takeover time. ?? Happy International Women’s Day. ?? Happy Women’s History Month. #FromTokenismToTakeover #YouthLeadership #WomenInLeadership #AfricaHealth #Pharmarun #WomensHistoryMonth #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #DigitalHealth #Leadership

Diphtheria Outbreak in Lagos: What You Need to Know and How to Stay Safe Lagos has confirmed an outbreak of diphtheria, a serious bacterial infection that spreads easily from person to person. This recent outbreak at King’s College, Victoria Island Annexe, has already resulted in the loss of a 12-year-old student, with 14 others hospitalized. The Lagos State Government has since activated an emergency response, emphasizing the need for vaccination, hygiene, and early detection to contain the disease. What is Diphtheria? Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that affects the nose and throat, producing a toxin that can cause severe complications, including breathing difficulties, heart inflammation (myocarditis), and nerve damage. The disease spreads through: - Coughing and sneezing - Close contact with infected individuals - Touching contaminated objects Symptoms to Watch Out For If you or someone you know experiences any of the following symptoms, seek medical help immediately: ? Sore throat with a thick gray coating ? Fever and chills ? Swollen neck glands ? Difficulty breathing or swallowing ? Weakness and fatigue How to Protect Yourself and Your Family The good news? Diphtheria is preventable with vaccines and simple hygiene practices. Here’s what you can do: ? Get vaccinated – The diphtheria vaccine (part of the DTP or pentavalent vaccine) is highly effective. The government has nearly 500,000 doses available for mass vaccination. ? Avoid close contact with sick individuals. ? Maintain good hygiene – Wash your hands often and disinfect shared surfaces. What the Lagos Government is Doing To control the outbreak, authorities are: ?? Monitoring close contacts of infected persons ?? Launching mass vaccination campaigns in schools and high-risk areas ?? Enhancing public awareness with health education materials ?? Strengthening infection prevention measures in schools and healthcare centers While the government is working hard to curb the spread, protecting yourself and your loved ones starts with awareness and action. If you or your children haven’t received a diphtheria vaccine, now is the time. ?? Need vaccines or medications? Pharmarun makes it easy. Therapist for Mums | Social Entrepreneur | Founder, Mum Confessions | Maternal Mental Health Advocate
Grateful for the opportunity to be featured by Pharmarun in celebration of #InternationalWomensDay! I had the opportunity to talk about a subject deeply close to my heart—maternal mental health—and how the work we do at Mum Confessions contributes to gender empowerment. We explored the role of society in supporting mothers, the urgent need for better maternal mental health care, and the changes I’d love to see for women in Nigeria over the next five years. But one question made me pause and reflect: If I could have lunch with any inspiring woman, who would it be? Read the full interview below to find out who I chose and why ?? Happy International Women’s Day to every woman navigating life, career, and motherhood… You deserve to thrive, not just survive!
