The 4th MedDevReg AfriSummit 2024, held on 5-6 November at the Grand Nile Tower in Cairo, Egypt, brought together national regulatory authorities, industry leaders, and stakeholders from the medical device and In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) sectors to explore regulatory challenges and opportunities across Africa. SALDA participated as an association partner, with Ms. Sarah Cohen, Executive Officer, and Ms. Loshnee Vandayar, SALDA Vice Chairperson and Senior Manager of Regulatory Affairs for Global Market Expansion EEMEA at Cepheid, both contributing to the session on “Innovating Compliance for IVDs.” They discussed challenges and opportunities for improving market access for IVDs across the continent. A key theme of the summit was the need for regulatory convergence and reliance among National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) to enhance access to medical devices and IVDs. Discussions emphasized the importance of extending reliance frameworks beyond stringent regulatory bodies to allow broader access to essential healthcare technologies. Regional initiatives such as the African Medicines Development Fund (AMDF) were highlighted as vital for facilitating regulatory alignment across Africa. The summit also focused on advancing local manufacturing standards, examining how African regulators can support the production of medical devices and IVDs within the continent. The Southern Africa regulatory updates session showcased ongoing efforts to digitally transform regulatory processes, aiming to streamline submissions and approvals. Countries like South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia are spearheading initiatives to improve market access and compliance for both medical devices and IVDs. The summit also explored the significance of digital documentation, specifically the adoption of electronic instructions for use (IFU), modernizing the regulatory process across Africa. Day 1 of the summit featured opening remarks from PRA Consultancy, the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), and other key regulatory figures. Topics included EU MDR/IVDR amendments and materiovigilance, which highlighted the importance of effective pre-market and post-market surveillance of medical devices and IVDs to ensure patient safety. Day 2 focused on updates from East African countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, as they evolve their regulatory frameworks. MDSAP audits were discussed as a tool for ensuring compliance with international medical device regulations. The summit also stressed the importance of securing the medical device supply chain, with discussions on combating counterfeits and implementing UDI (Unique Device Identification) systems to ensure traceability. The event concluded with regional roundtable discussions, fostering collaboration and sharing insights on regulatory challenges and opportunities across Africa.
