  • Cold sore outbreaks are no fun, and knowing when to take acyclovir (Zovirax) or Valacyclovir can make a huge difference in reducing their severity and duration. Oral Medications: If you feel that tingling sensation or notice the early signs of an outbreak, oral antiviral medications like Valacyclovir can be your best bet. Starting them early can help shorten the duration and reduce symptoms. Topical Medications: While topical ointments like Zovirax ointment or Abreva may provide some relief, oral medications generally have more effectiveness in treating cold sores. As soon as you feel that first sign of an outbreak, consider starting your medication to prevent it from getting worse. If you're unsure which treatment to go for, consult with a healthcare professional. Pro Tip: Taking medication at the first sign of tingling or bumps is key to faster healing and preventing an outbreak from becoming worse.
