Is #Meta making the right bet on home robotics? I recently read Will Shanklin’s latest piece from Engadget on the evolution of humanoid robots and the debate over where they’ll succeed first. Meta’s ambition to be the OS for these machines is an interesting play, and standardization in human-machine interfacing is a crucial step forward. While factories and warehouses offer controlled environments—predictable tasks, controlled variables, and a clear ROI for automation—the home is an ever-changing landscape of obstacles. My question remains: Is home robotics the right near-term focus, or is industrial automation where true innovation will take off first? Here are my 3 thoughts on what it will take to make it happen: 1?? Move Like Humans to Build Trust For robots to fit seamlessly into personal spaces, they need to move naturally, creating a sense of comfort. Achieving this level of human mimicry requires more than tech—it demands a deep understanding of human behavior. 2?? Human Data Set to Close the Training Gap A key hurdle for in-home robots is the lack of robust training data on human movement. Meta needs a lot of data to help robots behave more naturally. However, this remains an undeveloped area crucial to the project’s success. 3?? Balance Vision with Realism While Meta’s consumer-focused approach offers a Jetsons-style vision of home life, the gap between vision and real-world use is significant. To build trust—a bond with customers that Meta has repeatedly stumbled on through the years—they need to communicate clearly about what’s achievable now, steering clear of the hype that has hindered their Metaverse and BCI initiatives in general. I’m curious to see how Meta navigates these challenges and eager to hear from others—where do you see humanoid robots making their first big impact? #Robotics #AI #Automation #HumanoidRobots #HumanMachineInterface
