We (Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland) seek a motivated MD-PhD candidate to join our team in May/June for translational research on urinary tract infections (UTIs). The role focuses on analyzing clinical and microbiological data from trials on novel UTI treatments, particularly phage therapy.

We help doctors and scientists harness phages to treat antibiotic resistant infections.
关于我们
Our mission is to accelerate the use of phages (the class of viruses that target bacteria) so we can use them to eliminate the threat of antibiotic resistance. Phages are personalized antimicrobials, so leveraging them is logistically challenging. But when harnessed, they can form a safety net hospitals and governments can rely on when antibiotics fail. We’re building the operating system for personalized phage therapy — the comprehensive playbook for maximizing the success rate of phage therapy. Right now, this includes tools for physicians and medical centers to source phages for urgent patient infections (3 cures to date), data collection tools for learning from phage data (combining in vitro and in-human data to maximize insights about what works), and tools for phage researchers to efficiently manage, study, share and get credit for the phages they collect and make available for patient treatments (1000+ researchers collecting 10k+ phages across 40+ countries). Currently, we’re working with Phage Australia, led by the Westmead Institute for Medical Research in Sydney, Australia, to leverage our operating system as the backbone of their budding phage therapy ecosystem.

Phage cocktail or personalized therapy — an age-old binary, or a spectrum after all? Minyoung Kevin Kim (Stanford University) and colleagues from Mayo Clinic, QAMH, & KU Leuven published a review on how phage therapy is currently being implemented. They explore the rise of ‘phage therapy centers’ and the spectrum of treatment approaches being taken, extracting what’s common to most & highlighting decision points at each step. https://buff.ly/DYhxlq0 Jessica’s X thread about the paper https://buff.ly/i3Ss10L

Maria Touceda-Suarez (University of Arizona) and colleagues compiled a report on last year’s successful International Soil Virus Conference 2024, showing key developments in soil viral ecology and recommendations for future research in this rapidly advancing field. Also, participation at this meeting doubled since 2022, with 38% early-career researchers attending from 10 countries!
